Women's Basketball Welcomes Bridgewater State to Staake Gymnasium for Home Opener on Wednesday

SERIES HISTORY

•    Babson is 19-4 all-time against Bridgewater State in a series that dates back to 1988.
•    The Beavers have won four straight games against the Bears, although the teams have met just twice since the 2012 NCAA Tournament. 
•    Wednesday's contest will be the first played inside Staake Gymnasium since 2009, where the Green and White is 10-0 all-time versus Bridgewater State. 

LAST MEETING
•    Senior Katelyn Mollica led five players in double figures with 15 points and classmate Abby Miller added 14 points and four assists to help Babson cruise past the Bears, 89-64, on November 14, 2023, in Bridgewater, Mass. 
•    Junior Chloe Perreault and Kelly Walsh '24 both scored 11 points and junior Claire McCarthy chipped in with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting for the Beavers, who shot 47.1 percent and handed out 24 assists on 33 made field goals. 
•    Kylie Grassi led all players with 24 points and Sydney Bradbury and Sophia Gaucher added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Bridgewater State, which got outscored 28-15 in the third quarter.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
•    Babson (1-1) followed up a 52-47 win over Swarthmore with a 65-36 loss to No. 1/1 NYU at the Scholars Classic in New York City over the weekend. 
•    Senior Camilla Silk finished with six points and six rebounds and McCarthy and first-year Julia St. Laurent each scored six points apiece for the Beavers, who held the defending national champion Violets to just 36.5 percent shooting and were within 12 late in the third quarter.
•    Mollica is averaging 11.5 points and 2.0 steals, sophomore Samantha Reale is contributing 8.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals, and Silk (7.5 pts, 4.0 reb, 2.5 stl) is shooting 60 percent from the floor to begin the year.
•    The Green and White is shooting just 32.6 percent over its first two games but has held its opponents to 20.6 percent shooting from three-point range and owns a +5.0 rebounding margin. 

SCOUTING THE BEARS
•    Bridgewater State (0-1) suffered an 80-57 loss at Division I Bryant in its season opener last Friday. 
•    Kylee Piche scored 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting and Grassi added 12 points for the Bears, who led 22-21 after the first quarter and were down just one midway through the second. 
•    Grassi (20.6 pts, 4.2 reb, 2.6 ast) shot 43.8 percent from the floor last winter, senior Jessica D'Amours averaged 7.4 points and 5.3 rebounds, and Piche (8.1 pts, 3.3 reb, 2.8 ast) returned for a graduate year after taking last season off. 
•    Bridgewater State was picked to finish atop the MASCAC preseason poll after reaching its third consecutive conference tournament final last season. 

BEAVERS PICKED THIRD BY NEWMAC COACHES
•    After reaching its third consecutive conference tournament final last winter, Babson finished in a tie for third place when the NEWMAC released its preseason coaches' poll last month. 
•    The Green and White, which claimed two first-place votes, and Springfield both finished with 101 points, while defending league champions Smith collected eight first-place votes to finish atop the poll with 116 points. MIT was second with 104 points. 

THOMPSON GARNERS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA HONORS
•    Graduate student Toni Thompson was named to the D3hoops.com Preseason All-America fifth team last week. 
•    A transfer from Occidental College, Thompson returned after missing the entire 2022-23 season because of injury to average 24.5 points, 11. 2 rebounds and 2.2 steals while shooting 42.5 percent in 26 starts last season while leading Occidental to its first conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance since 2011.
•    Thompson recorded 17 double-doubles, scored 30 or more points seven times and reached double figures in scoring in all but one contest in 2023-24, and averaged 20.1 points on 46.8 percent shooting and 8.7 boards in 45 games over two seasons at Occidental.  

HOME SWEET HOME
•    The Beavers have won five consecutive home openers, which includes a 79-44 victory over Brandeis last season. 
•    Babson went 7-4 inside Staake Gymnasium last winter and are 41-9 at home dating back to January 2021. 

BUCKLING DOWN ON DEFENSE
•    Over its first two games, Babson has allowed 56.0 points and is giving up just 0.85 points per possession.
•    The Beavers held their first two foes to 38.2 percent shooting and limited Swarthmore and NYU to a total of just 16 first-quarter points. 

NUMBERS TO KNOW
•    The Beavers finished a perfect 10-0 in 2023-24 when leading at halftime. 
•    Babson was 12-3 last winter when shooting 40 percent or better. 
•    The Green and White is 43-3 going back to the start of the 2021-22 campaign when holding its opponents below 60 points. 
•    The Beavers is 12-2 since the start of last season when outscoring their opponents at the free throw line.
