Matia Cristiani (Miami, Fla.) won two singles matches and teamed with junior
Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) for a pair of doubles victories to reach the semifinals in both the singles and doubles brackets Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Championships at Wesleyan University.
Cristiani, seeded third in the singles draw, outlasted Annabelle Siegel of Williams in a round of 16 match, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3, and breezed past No. 6 seeded Leila Epstein of Wesleyan in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-2. She will face second-seeded Sahana Raman of Middlebury in a semifinal match on Sunday.
The top-seed and defending champion in the singles draw, Soffer defeated Maddie Swire of Amherst in her round of 16 match but suffered an upset loss to Sarah Youngberg of Wesleyan in the semifinals, 6-7(1), 6-4, 10-5.
Soffer and Cristiani, the top seed in the doubles bracket, pulled out an 8-5 victory over Caroline Stuhlfaut and Hannah Buckhout of Bowdoin in the round of 16, and took care of Jane Ladaga and Margaux Molyneux of Williams, 8-0, in the quarterfinals. The Babson duo will face Natalie Hu and Stephanie Woodbury of Tufts in the semifinals on Sunday.
