WELLESLEY, Mass.—Three different pairings won a pair of matches in doubles to highlight the Babson College women's tennis team's performance on the opening day of the Wellesley Invitational on Friday.
Junior
Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore
Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador), who reached the Division III doubles final last May, opened the fall with an 8-5 win over Rebecca Suarez and Bhakti Parwani of Brandeis. They followed it up with an 8-4 victory over Annissa Mu and Melinda Alviar of Wellesley in their second match of the day.
Senior
Adèle Fernández (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and first-year
Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) defeated Nancy Zhang and Sanjana Kumar of Brandeis 8-5 and were 8-2 winners of Ella Baker and Elise Brennan of Trinity. Sophomores
Kamila Stasiowska (Burlington, Conn.) and
Mariana Campos (Houston, Texas) also won both their matches topping Ella Chase and Ella Subramanian of Brandeis 8-4 before cruising to an 8-0 triumph over Johanna Woitschatzke and Phebe Fisher of Trinity.
Seniors
Juliette Moschella (Little Silver, N.J.) and
Shanya Naik (Mumbai, India) dropped their opening doubles match to Cecilia Denis and Mandy Reyes, but responded with an easy 8-0 win over Kennedy White and Hellena Trojer of Trinity. Sophomores
Grace Starcher (Morristown, N.J.) and
Shyla Khattar (New Delhi, India) also split their matches, bouncing back from an 8-5 loss to Bolkvadez and Zhang of Brandeis with an 8-7 (7-4) triumph over Denis and Reyes.
Senior
Jane Wang (San Diego, Calif.) and first-year
Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) defeated White and Trojer 8-3 in their opening match and finished 1-1 on the day.
Each of Babson's 14 players are set to play a pair of singles matches on Saturday. Play will get underway indoors at Brandeis beginning at 9 a.m.
