Box Score 2 BABSON PARK, Mass.—Six different players recorded multi-hit games and Babson College got strong starting pitching from seniors Tim Noone (Needham, Mass.) and Anthony St. John (Hopewell, N.J.) on the way to sweeping WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Govoni Field.
Babson, which has won 12 of its last 13 games, improves to 14-8 overall and 4-1 in conference play, while WPI has lost three straight games to slip to 11-12 overall and 1-4 in NEWMAC play.
Game 1: Babson 9, WPI 2
Graduate student Ryan Noone (Belmont, Mass.) and senior Michael O'Brien (Medford, Mass.) both went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while junior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) doubled and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Beavers, who had seven players get a hit and drive in a run. Tim Noone allowed two runs, both in the first inning, on four hits while striking out 10 over 7.0 innings to improve to 3-1 on the year with the win.
The Engineers jumped on top 2-0 in the top of the first as senior Jeffrey Brennan (Amsterdam, N.Y.) doubled and scored on an RBI single by classmate Kyle Johns (Milltown, N.J.) and junior Jacob Hand (Niskayuna, N.Y.) walked and came home on a sacrifice fly by senior Danny Johnson (Mendon, Mass.). The Green and White responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame thanks to an RBI double by Savage, a triple to right center by senior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) and an RBI ground out by first-year Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.,) to take the lead.
Ryan Noone made it 4-2 with a two-out RBI knock in the third and the Beavers extended their lead to 6-2 in the fourth on an RBI ground out by Savage and an infield single by first-year Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.). Babson tacked on three more runs in the fifth, which included an RBI double by O'Brien and a sacrifice fly by graduate student Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, N.Y.) for a seven-run lead.
Tim Noone retired 11 straight batters after giving up the two runs in the first and allowed just a pair of singles over his final six innings of work.
Junior Joseph Peregrim (Watervliet, N.Y.) suffered the loss and dropped to 1-3 on the year for WPI after giving up seven earned runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings.
Game 2: Babson 10, WPI 3
Basile went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, Santos was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Hvozdovic singled three times and scored once to lead Babson's 13-hit attack. Savage also doubled as part of a two-hit day and also drove in a pair of runs in support of St. John, who fanned five and allowed just one run on six hits over 7.0 innings to improve to 4-0 this spring.
Brennan, Johnson and junior Jake DelMonte (Southington, Conn.l, n) all finished with two hits to lead the Engineers.
The Beavers scored in each of the first two innings before busting the game open with a three-run third. Savage plated Santos with an RBI single to right and then scored on Basile's infield base hit, and Ryan Noone laced a double down the right field line to bring in Cook for a 5-0 advantage.
The Green and White left the bases loaded in the fourth but Basile knocked in a pair of runs with a two-out single through the right side in the sixth and Santos drove in junior Ike Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) ith an RBI single and then scored on Savage's double down the left field line to make it 9-1 in the seventh.
Senior Everett Wonson (Wenham, Mass.) shouldered the loss for the Engineers to fall to 2-1 on the year after giving up five runs, just two of them earned, on eight hits over 4.0 innings.
Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Coast Guard at 3:30 p.m. while WPI hosts Wentworth on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 57-25 all-time against WPI and have won 11 of the last 12 games in the series.
• Hvozdovic and Basile extended their hitting streaks to nine and eight games, respectively, while Santos has now reached base safely in 22 straight outings.
• Babson is 8-0 at home this season and is now 56-11 at Govoni Field since the start of the 2018 campaign.
• The Beavers are 13-2 this spring when recording at least two extra-base hits.
