Box Score BOSTON, Mass.— First-year James Clark (Southborough, Mass.) allowed just three hits over a season-best seven shutout innings for this first collegiate victory, sophomore Luke McClintock (South Hamilton, Mass.) retired all six batters he faced, and junior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) reached base five times on three hits and a pair of walks as Babson College shut out the University of Massachusetts Boston, 6-0, in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Monan Park.
With the win, Babson won its second straight game in as many days to improve to 22-13 overall while UMass Boston dropped its third game in a row and dipped to 19-13.
Savage went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while first-year Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) had two hits with an RBI and a run scored for the Beavers. First-year Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.), senior Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.) and junior Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) all had one hit apiece and Hvozdovic, senior Jackson Kelly (Wenonah, N.J.), and sophomore Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) all produced an RBI in the victory.
Clark scattered three hits and three walks over the first five innings before retiring seven batters in a row. After Clark hit the leadoff batter in the eighth inning, McClintock came on and closed the door with two hitless innings, striking out two, to preserve the whitewash.
Junior Luke Leavitt (Manchester by the Sea, Mass.) had a single and a double in three trips to the plate for the Beacons and graduate student Craig Corliss (Hopkinton, Mass.) had a double to account for the three UMB hits. First-year Ethan Hunt (Groveland, Mass.) struck out three batters in the first three innings but allowed two runs on one hit and three walks and suffered the loss.
The Beavers scored two runs in the top of the first inning with just one hit. The first three Beavers reached as junior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) was hit by a pitch, Basile singled to right and Savage walked to load the bases. Kelly drew a one-out walk to score Santos and Basile crossed the plate on an infield grounder by Hvozdovic.
After leaving two runners on base in the fifth inning and the bases loaded in the sixth, Babson added an unearned run in the seventh. Savage led off with a single to left and came around to score on a pair of infield grounders and a Beacon infield throwing error with two outs. The Green and White got a little breathing room in the top of the eighth when Basile and Savage delivered back-to-back RBI singles to left.
Babson tacked on another run in the ninth after Hvozdovic ripped a leadoff triple over the center fielder's head and came home on a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Guest.
Clark was impressive all day for the Beavers. He got out of trouble in the second when UMB advanced a runner at third with one out, retiring the side on a pop-up and a strikeout. After the hosts got a runner to second base with no outs in the third, he got three fly balls to end the inning, and with two on and no outs in the fourth, he induced a double play ball and a pop-up to end the inning. With two runners in scoring position in the fifth, he got an inning-ending grounder to short.
The Green and White wrap up the regular season this weekend with a three-game New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) series against league-leading Wheaton, beginning Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Norton, Mass. UMB plays a Little East Conference make-up game on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Plymouth State.
