Eighth-Inning Rally Helps Baseball Edge Clark, 6-5

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) tied the game with an RBI triple and scored the go-ahead run on a two-out error in the bottom of the eighth inning as Babson College erased an early four-run deficit to edge visiting Clark University, 6-5, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Govoni Field.

With the win, Babson improves to 21-13 overall and 10-4 in conference play, while Clark slips to 16-18 overall and 7-7 in the NEWMAC.

Basile was 3-for-5 on the day with two RBI and two runs scored, while graduate student Ryan Noone (Belmont, Mass.) and first-year Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) both had two hits and knocked in a run for the Beavers. Junior Ike Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) singled twice and classmate Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) singled, scored and walked three times in the win.

Sophomore Tyler Jones (West Haven, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI and senior Ryan Caulfield (Simsbury, Conn.) singled three times and scored once to lead the Cougars' 12-hit attack.

Clark took a 2-0 lead thanks to a two-out, two-run single by Jones in the top of the first and tacked on two more runs after loading the bases with three straight singles in the second as graduate student Steven Mooney (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored on an infield ground out and junior Billy Sullivan (Hicksville, N.Y.) raced home on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. The Green and White cut its deficit in half in the last of the third as Basile plated Santos with a single through the left side and later scored on a base hit to center by Noone.

Jones struck again in the fifth, doubling to left center to bring home sophomore Carter Doran (Natick, Mass.) extending the Cougars' lead to 5-2. The Beavers responded with three-straight two-out singles to pull back within two runs when Noone scored from second on Hvozdovic's knock through the left side.

Cougars' junior Andres Hulfachor (Nashua, N.H.) retired the side in order in the seventh before running into trouble in the eighth. Senor Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.) doubled with one out, graduate student Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, N.Y.) got plunked and both runners moved into scoring position with one out on a failed pickoff attempt. Manning scored on Santos' RBI ground out to cut the Babson deficit to 5-4, Basile followed with a triple into the right field corner that brought home Pirkl to tie the game and then scored when junior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) reached on a throwing error to give the hosts a 6-5 lead.

Senior Tim Person (Hudson, Mass.) worked around a two-out single and a walk in the ninth to record his first career save for the Beavers. Sophomore Matt Milone (Amston, Conn.) earned the win to improve to 1-2 with a shutout inning of relief. Junior Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) started and went 7.0 innings allowing four earned runs while striking out three.

Hulfachor (1-2) shouldered the loss for the Cougars after giving up two earned runs over two innings.

Babson travels to UMass Boston on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., while Clark travels to WPI on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
