SERIES HISTORY
• Babson is 43-21 all-time against Clark in a series that dates back to 1983.
• The Beavers have won seven consecutive games against the Cougars, which includes five straight victories at home going back to 2016.
• Five of the last nine games between the teams have been decided by either one or two runs.
LAST MEETING
• Senior Michael Cook hit the go-ahead home run in the top of the 12th inning to help Babson rally for a 7-6 win at Clark last Tuesday.
• Cook was 3-for-4 with two RBI and junior Brant Savage went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and two runs scored for the Beavers, who got 3.2 innings of scoreless relief from senior Tim Person.
• Sophomore Carter Doran hit a three-run homer and senior Ryan Caulfield went 4-for-6 with a double and a run scored for the Cougars, who led 4-0 after four innings and took a 6-5 lead to the ninth.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• Babson (20-13, 9-4 NEWMAC) has dropped two straight games after suffering a 9-0 loss at Johnson & Wales on Monday.
• Senior Jack Pirkl recorded the lone hit of the game and Cook walked twice and had a stolen base for the Beavers, who walked nine times and left nine men on base in the loss.
• Savage is batting .344 with eight doubles, 10 home runs, 42 RBI and 33 runs scored, first-year Ryan Hvozdovic is hitting .336 with four doubles, two homers, 24 runs batted in and 23 runs scored, and Cook boasts a .333 average to go along with six extra-base hits and 26 runs driven in.
• Junior Tristen Spalter is 2-2 with a 3.35 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 53.2 innings, Person (2-2, 4.30 ERA) has not allowed a run in eight straight appearances out of the bullpen and senior Stephen McLendon is 2-0 with one save and 16 strikeouts in 16.2 innings of work this spring.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
• Clark (16-17, 7-6 NEWMAC) took two of out of three from Springfield and defeated the Pride 11-3 in series finale last Saturday.
• Graduate student Andrea Casabianca drove in three runs, Caulfield went 3-for-5 with a triple and Doran tripled, knocked in a run and scored twice for the Cougars, who got 11 strikeouts over 7.0 innings from junior Maxwell Gitlin.
• Sophomore Tyler Jones is batting .388 with five extra-base hits, 12 RBI and 20 runs scored, Caulfield is hitting .356 with four doubles, two triples, 26 walks, 16 RBI and 26 runs scored, and Doran checks in with a .282 average to go along with six home runs, 20 runs batted in and 25 runs scored.
• Senior Max Moss (2-0, 2.61 ERA) has 31 strikeouts in 38.0 innings this spring, junior Andres Hulfachor (1-1, 5.83 ERA) gave up four earned runs in 5.1 innings last Tuesday against Babson and senior Michael Carterud has gone 2-2 with one save and a 3.26 earned run average in 13 relief appearances.
PLAYOFF PUSH
• The Beavers begin the week three games behind first-place Wheaton (12-1) in the East division of the NEWMAC and will likely need to beat Clark and sweep the Lyons in their upcoming three-game series to earn the top seed in next week's conference tournament.
• Clark owns a one-game lead over Coast Guard (6-7) and is two games ahead of Springfield (5-8) in the league's West Division. The winner will be seeded second and get a home game on the opening day of the tournament next Friday.
A SAVAGE AT THE PLATE
• Savage went 8-for-22 (.364) with three doubles, three homers, 12 RBI, five walks and eight runs scored in five games last week.
• He went deep twice against MIT and set a new career high by driving in six runs in the series opener against the Engineers on Friday.
• Savage also leads the team with 15 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI games this spring.
BEAVER BITES
• First-year Chris Basile, who is batting .327 on the year, had his nine-game hitting streak snapped in Monday's loss but has still recorded at least one knock in 17 of his last 19 starts going back to March 30.
• Senior Jackson Kelly has reached base in seven consecutive outings, while Pirkl owns a five-game hitting streak and is batting .375 (6-for-16) with a double, three RBI and three runs scored during this stretch.
• Five different players have recorded at least 10 or more multi-hit games this season, a list which includes Hvozdovic (13), Santos (12) and both Cook and Basile with 10.
• Cook (11), Hvozdovic (10) and graduate student Ryan Noone (10) lead the team in two-out RBI.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
• The Beavers are 17-1 this season when scoring six or more runs.
• Babson is 22-1 over the last two season when giving up two runs or fewer.
• The Beavers have gone 18-3 this spring when recording at least two extra-base hits and are 15-1 when finishing with 10 or more hits.
• The Green and White is 18-1 this season and 35-2 going back to the start of last year when leading after seven innings.
• Babson is 11-2 at Govoni Field this season.
