SERIES HISTORY
• Babson and MIT will meet for a three-game series beginning on Friday afternoon in Cambridge before shifting to Babson Park for a doubleheader on Saturday.
• The Beavers are 57-40-1 all-time against the Engineers in a series that dates back to 1980 and have won 13 of the last 18 games between the teams.
• The Green and White took two out of three in last year's regular season series on April 22-23, but the Engineers went on to knock the Beavers out of the NEWMAC Tournament in an elimination game in May.
LAST MEETING
• Senior Graham Cartwright scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh and then recorded the final six outs for his second save of the year as fifth-seeded MIT defeated third-seeded Babson, 4-1, on May 8, 2022, at Wheaton's Sidell Stadium.
• Graduate student Jack Pirkl singled, walked and drove in a run, while Josh Yellen '22 and sophomore Walter Sadowsky both went 1-for-3 with a single and a walk for the Beavers. Sean Burychka '22 also singled and scored in the loss, and senior Anthony St. John allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings on the hill and suffered the loss.
• Junior Teddy Schoenfeld went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI, senior Kyle Sonandres doubled as part of a two-hit day, and senior Jake Sonandres and Erik Anderson and sophomore Reed Tubbs each drove in a run for the Engineers. Senior Matt Leonard fanned seven while giving up just one run on five hits over 7.0 innings to pick up the victory.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• Babson (18-11, 7-3 NEWMAC) lost for just the third time in its last 13 outings Wednesday with a 4-2 setback to Tufts in Medford, Mass.
• Senior Patrick Manning went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored and first-year Chris Basile singled twice and drove in a run for the Beavers, who left 10 men on base. First-year James Clark suffered the loss after giving up two runs on three hits to go along with four strikeouts and four walks in 4.0 innings.
• First-year Ryan Hvozdovic (.364) has four doubles, two home runs and 23 runs batted in, senior Michael O'Brien (.364) has six doubles and 14 RBI, senior Michael Cook (.363) has six extra-base hits and ranks second on the team with 25 RBI, and junior Brant Savage (.342) is tied for the NEWMAC lead with eight home runs and is third with 33 RBI. Basile (.324, 2 doubles, 18 RBI) has eight multi-hit games and junior Tanner Santos (.295) has 27 walks, a .465 on-base percentage and has a NEWMAC-leading 16 stolen bases.
• Senior Tim Noone (3-1, 1.42 ERA) has recorded 58 strikeouts against just seven walks in 50.2 innings, St. John (4-1, 3.55 ERA) has 26 Ks and just four walks, and junior Tristen Spalter (2-2, 3.35 ERA) has fanned 41 and walked just seven in 53.2 innings.
SCOUTING THE ENGINEERS
• MIT (10-14, 5-5 NEWMAC) is coming off a 15-3, 7-inning victory over WPI in conference play on Tuesday in Northborough, Mass.
• Cartwright finished 3-for-3 with three runs and six RBI including a double and homerun to lead the Engineers, who plated five runs in each of the first three innings. Schoenfeld, junior Tyler Godfrey and first-year Eitan Moore all added three-hit games with Jake Sonandres driving in three runs and first-year Lawrence Tang adding two. Junior Karl Meyer improved to 3-2 with a complete game win, working seven innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.
• Cartwright (.379) has four doubles, a NEWMAC co-leading eight home runs and a team-high 29 runs batted in, Schoenfeld (.354) has eight extra-base hits and has scored a team-high 24 runs, and Kyle Sonandres (.333) has seven doubles and 21 RBI. Jake Sonandres (.304) has eight doubles and 19 RBI, and Godfrey (.338) and Moore (.304) give the Engineers six .300 hitters.
• Meyer (3-2, 6.69 ERA) has recorded 42 strikeouts in 37.2 innings, first-year Chase Rubin (2-1, 4.46 ERA) has 28 Ks in 34.1 innings over 11 appearances, the second-most innings on the team, and first-year Matthew Spenner (2-1, 1.66 ERA) has 32 whiffs in 21.2 innings over eight appearances, including two starts.
LEADING OFF
• Santos has reached base safely in 27 of the last 28 games and ranks first in the NEWMAC in both walks (27) and stolen bases (16).
• He is also fifth in the conference with 29 runs scored and ranks eighth in the league with a .475 on-base percentage.
NCAA STATS LEADERS
• Beaver pitchers are No. 2 in Division III in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.56) and walks allowed per nine innings (2.06) and fourth in WHIP (walks/hits per innings pitched) with a 1.24 mark.
• Babson is ranked 34th in Division III with a .969 fielding percentage, with 34 errors in 29 games. The Green and White have 13 error-free games and seven outings with just one miscue.
• Noone is ranked fourth nationally in WHIP (0.75), 11th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (8.29), and 16th in earned run average (1.42). St. John is 13th in walks allowed per nine innings (0.95) and 31st in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.50).
BEAVER BITES
• First-year Hvozdovic (13), Savage (12), Cook (10) and Santos (10) lead the Green and White in multi-hit games and Basile had two hits at Tufts to extend his multi-hit total to six games.
• Cook has reached base safely in 13 straight games while Savage has reached in 10 games in a row and has 11 multi-RBI games.
• Person has not allowed a run in 11.1 innings over his last eight relief appearances and has recorded 14 strikeouts while allowing just four hits over this stretch.
• Junior Ike Kiely is 6-for-15 (.400) with a double, four walks, three RBI and six runs scored over his last four starts.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
• The Beavers are 16-1 this season and 35-4 over the last two years when scoring six or more runs.
• Babson is 14-4 this spring when outhitting its opponents.
• The Green and White is 33-2 since the start of the 2022 campaign when leading after seven innings.
