Box Score MEDFORD, Mass.—Senior Gavin Brown (Bradenton, Fla.) struck out six over five shutout innings and three different players drove in a run to help Tutfs University defeat visiting Babson College, 4-2, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday night at Sol Gittleman Field.
Babson, which lost for just the third time over its last 13 games, is now 18-11 on the season. Tufts, which improved to 12-0 on the year at home, has won seven consecutive games to push its record to 19-6.
Senior Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored and first-year Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) singled twice and drove in a run for the Beavers, who left 10 men on base. First-year James Clark (Southborough, Mass.) suffered the loss to drop to 0-1 after giving up two runs on three hits to go along with four strikeouts and four walks in 4.0 innings.
Senior Connor Bowman (Wellesley, Mass.) was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and classmate Jimmy Evans (Norwalk, Conn.) finished 2-for-3 with an RBI double, a walk and a run scored to lead the Jumbos, who finished with just six hits. Brown (1-0) allowed just two hits over the first five innings as five Tufts pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts in the victory.
Junior Patrick Solomon (Northborough, Mass.) beat out an infield single to start the third and scored on an RBI groundout by first-year Jesse McCullough (Sudbury, Mass.) for the game's first run and Evans followed with a two-out double to left to drive in sophomore Henry Fleckner (Weston, Mass.) to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage. The Green and White left runners on the corners in the fourth and pulled within 2-1 when junior Luca Rubin (Los Angeles, Calif.) drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk before stranding three more on base.
Bowman made it 3-1 by leading off the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot to left, but Manning tripled with one out in the top of the seventh and scored on Basile's infield single to cut the Beavers' deficit back to 3-2. Tufts answered back in the bottom of the frame though as Evans led off with an infield single and later scored on an error to regain a two-run edge.
Sophomore Connor Podeszwa (Waterford, Conn.) worked around a leadoff single by Babson graduate student Ryan Noone (Belmont, Mass.) in the eighth and graduate student Brendan McFall (Baldwin, N.Y.) allowed only an infield single to Manning in the ninth to record his sixth save.
Babson returns to action on Friday when it opens a three-game series with MIT in Cambridge at 3:30 p.m., while the Jumbos head to Hartford, Conn., for a three-game series against Trinity on Friday at 3 p.m.
