Box Score WORCESTER, Mass.—Senior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) blasted a solo home run with one out in the top of the 12th inning to help visiting Babson College defeat Clark University, 7-6, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Granger Field.
Babson, which has won 10 of its last 12 games, improves to 18-10 overall and 7-3 in conference play, while Clark slips to 14-16 overall and 5-5 in the NEWMAC with its sixth loss in seven outings.
Cook went 3-for-4 with three walks and two RBI and junior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) doubled, homered, walked twice and drove in three runs for the Beavers. Classmates Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) and Ike Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) and first-year Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) all singled twice in the victory. Senior Tim Person (Hudson, Mass.) tossed 3.2 innings of shutout relief to earn the win and improve to 2-2, while senior Tim Noone (Needham, Mass.) got the final three outs to record his first career save.
Senior Ryan Caulfield (Simsbury, Conn.) went 4-for-6 with a double and a run scored and sophomore Carter Doran (Natick, Mass.) hit a three-run homer in the third inning to lead the Cougars. Classmate Tyler Jones (West Haven, Conn.) singled twice and scored a pair of runs, while senior Anthony Keefe (Plymouth, Mass.) added a pair of base hits, and RBI and a run scored in the loss.
The Green and White stranded seven men on base over the first four innings and trailed 4-0 before Cook singled to center to score Savage with one out in the top of the fifth. Kiely walked and later scored on a passed ball to make it 4-2 and Savage hit a three-run homer to give the Beavers a 5-4 lead in the sixth.
Babson junior Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth and retired six of the final seven hitters he faced in the sixth and seventh before Clark rallied to go back in front in the eighth. Jones drew a leadoff walk and scored on Keefe's single to right, which was misplayed allowing him to reach third with one out before scoring on first-year Brayden Hollinrake's (Goffstown, N.H.) sacrifice fly one batter late to give the Cougars a 6-5 lead.
The Beavers took advantage of a defensive miscue to tie the game in the top of the ninth as Kiely reached on an error and stole second before later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Santos to force extra innings. Person struck out five and worked around his lone hit, a two-out double by Caulfield in the bottom of the 11th, and Cook hit his second homer of the year in the 12th to put the Green and White ahead for good.
Noone, who made just the second relief appearance of his career, gave up a one-out single to Jones but got a strikeout and a fly out to center to retire the side.
Babson is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Tufts at 6 p.m., while Clark begins a three-game series with Springfield on Friday at home.
