Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Emerson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Babson College scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and got 4.1 innings of shutout relief from seniors Tim Person (Hudson, Mass.) and Stephen McLendon (Nashua, N.H.) to win game two 12-6 while earning a split of Saturday's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader with Emerson College at Govoni Field.

The Beavers dropped Saturday's opener 12-5 but took two of three games in the weekend series to improve to 17-10 overall and 6-3 in conference play. Emerson is now 15-14 overall and 3-6 in the NEWMAC.

Game 1: Emerson 12, Babson 5
Junior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) and first-year Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) both went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Beavers. Senior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) and junior Luca Rubin (Los Angeles, Calif.) also singled and drove in a run in the loss.

Senior Matt Nachamie (Merrick, N.Y.), junior Ty Bourne (Tappan, N.Y.), classmate Jake Okamoto (Placentia, Calif.) and senior Thai Morgan (Waldwick, N.J.) all finished with two hits and combined to score nine runs for the Lions. Junior Benny Guevara (Hobart, Ind.) improved to 3-0 on the year going 6.0 innings and allowing five runs on seven hits to go along with four strikeouts. Senior AJ Ortega (Syracuse, N.Y.) also fanned four over three shutout innings to pickup his first save of the year.

The Green and White jumped in front on Hvozdovic's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the second before Emerson responded with a four-run third that included just two hits. Copeland had and RBI single and scored on a wild pitch while sophomore Briggs Loveland (Burleson, Texas) and senior Chris Ferara (Coral Springs, Fla.) both drove in runs with sacrifice flies. The Lions tacked on two more runs in the fourth as Bourne raced home on an infield single by Morgan and Okamoto slid in safely on a well-executed double steal with runners on the corners to make it 6-1.

The Beavers used RBI singles by Rubin in the fourth and Cook in the fifth to pull within 6-3 but the visitors scored twice on wild pitches and tacked on another run on an RBI ground out by Copeland to push their lead back to 9-3 in the top of the sixth. Nachamie made it 11-5 with a two-out, two-run blast in the seventh and Emerson again pulled off a double steal with runners on the corners to score its final run in the eighth.

Senior Anthony St. John (Hopewell, N.J.) suffered his first loss of the year to drop to 4-1 on the year for Babson after giving up seven runs in 5.1 innings.

Game 2: Babson 12, Emerson 6
Graduate student Ryan Noone (Belmont, Mass.) went 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, Cook singled three times and scored four runs, and junior Ike Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap. First-year Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) drove in two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies and Santos walked twice in the victory.

Ferara went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, sophomore Robby Posio (Queens, N.Y.) singled twice and drove in two runs and classmate Jake Hatch (Carlisle, Mass.) doubled and homered for Emerson in the loss.

Down 1-0 in the second, the Green and White used RBI singles by Kiely and senior Jackson Kelly (Wenonah, N.J.) and a sacrifice fly by Teator to take a 3-1 lead. Ferara knocked in a run and scored on a wild pitch to help the Lions pull even in the top of the third before Noone drove in Cook with a single to left and then scored on Kiely's double to deep left to regain a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the frame.

Hatch led off the fifth with a solo shot to left and the visitors went back in front 6-5 thanks to back-to-back RBI singles by Bourne and Posio. Babson again answered back though, delivering the decisive blow with a six-run bottom of the fifth. The Beavers recorded just two hits in the inning, an RBI single to center by Noone to tie the game and a line drive off the pitcher by first-year Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) that drove in another run, but took advantage of two walks, two wild pitches, a hit batsman and an error to build a 12-6 advantage.

Person, who improved to 1-2 on the year with the win, struck out five and gave up just a pair of singles in 2.1 innings of shutout relief before turning the ball over to McLendon to start the eighth. He fanned two and retired the first five batters he faced to close out the win.

First-year Angelo Deer (West Orange, N.J.) shouldered the loss to drop to 2-4 on the season for the Lions. He gave up 11 runs, nine of them earned, over 4.0 innings.

Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it visits Clark at 3:30 p.m., while Emerson travels to Suffolk on Monday at 12 p.m.
