SERIES HISTORY
vs. NYU
• Babson is 1-3 all-time against NYU in a series that dates back to 2002-03.
• The Beavers won last year's match in the first meeting between the two schools since 2008.
vs. Tufts
• Babson has not defeated Tufts in 20 matches in the all-time series that dates back to 1994-95.
• The Beavers lost 5-4 in 2016 and 6-3 in 2020, the two closest decisions going back to a 4-3 setback in 1995.
LAST MEETING
vs. NYU
• Senior Parker Law and sophomore Brady Anderson earned points in both singles as doubles to help 25th-ranked Babson defeat visiting NYU, 6-3, on April 2, 2022 at the Babson Tennis Complex.
• Law and senior Jack MacDonald were 8-1 winners at number three, Anderson and grad student Kian Yazdi followed with an 8-3 victory at number two and Babson's top pairing of senior Maxwell Conlin and sophomore Ole Lepsoe posted an 8-6 result at number one.
• NYU won three of the first four singles matches to go to decision, all of which went three sets. Senior Alex Yang defeated Lepsoe at number one, sophomore Zachary Freier downed Conlin at number two and junior Joseph He was a winner over Yazdi at number three. The Beavers pulled out the victory with wins by Anderson at number four, Law at number six, and Gabriel Cestero at number five.
vs. Tufts
• Markus Nordby '21 and Conlin both picked up points in singles and doubles play but Babson suffered a 6-3 loss to 18th-ranked Tufts on March 7, 2020, at the Winchester Indoor Tennis Center.
• The Beavers' lone point in doubles came at number one where Nordby and Conlin outlasted the Jumbos' 10th-ranked pairing of Boris Sorkin '21 and senior Josh Belandres 8-7 (9-7). Paris Pentousis '22 and Ethan Bershtein '20 were 8-1 winners for Tufts at number two and Jason Scanlon '20 and Jack Moldenhauer '22 won 8-6 at number three.
• Conlin continued his strong play in singles with a triumph over Bershstein at number five. Nordby followed with his biggest win of the spring, knocking off Sorkin, who was the top-ranked singles player in Division III, 7-6 (7-2), 2-6, 10-5. The Jumbos took the remaining singles matches in straight sets as Isaac Gorelik, Pentousis and Moldenhauer captured victories at numbers two, three, and four, and Belandres was a winner at number six.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• No. 23 Babson (15-1, 6-0 NEWMAC) extended its winning streak to 13 with a 6-3 triumph over No. 36 MIT on Friday that clinched the NEWMAC regular season title.
• Sophomore Brady Anderson and first-year Luis Utrilla were winners in both doubles and singles as Babson swept the doubles matches. Graduate student Brooks Green, sophomore Wesley Zhang and seniors Maxwell Conlin and Parker Law were also winners in doubles, and senior Jason Weisman was a a winner for the Beavers at number six singles.
• Utrilla (14-2) leads the team in singles wins, including 11-0 in dual matches, followed by Weisman (10-5), Anderson (9-7), senior Jack MacDonald (9-2), and Conlin (8-4). Anderson and Utrilla have posted a team-leading 10-3 mark in doubles, and Green (7-3) and Zhang (7-1) are strong singles players for the Beavers while teaming up to go 6-0 in doubles.
SCOUTING THE VIOLETS
• NYU (6-5, 1-1 UAA) is coming off back-to-back losses to No. 31 Brandeis Sunday and No. 39 Stevens on Friday, both by 6-3 scores.
• First-year Boren Zheng registered a 6-4, 6-3 win at second singles against Stevens while He needed a third-set tiebreaker for a win at fourth singles, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6). He and graduate student Andy Watterson were also winners in a tiebreaker at third doubles, 8-7, 7-3).
• He leads the Violets with an 11-2 record in singles, while Zheng is 9-1, mostly at number three, and Watterson is 7-4, including 5-3 at number six. Rumaish Khastgir is 7-5 (5-4 at number five), and Yang is 4-8 at number one. NYU's top doubles team of Freier-Yang is 6-6 while Lee and Zheng are 6-4 and He and Watterson are 8-4.
SCOUTING THE JUMBOS
• Tufts (13-0, 7-0 NESCAC), which will play matches Saturday against Trinity and No. 31 Brandeis, picked up a 6-3 victory over No. 16 North Carolina Wesleyan on Friday in Medford.
• The Jumbos swept the doubles competition with sophomores Vuk Vuksanovic and Derin Acaroglu winning 8-1 at number one, Belandres and senior Rishabh Sharda winning 8-6 at number two, and first-year Alex Ganchey and Moldenhauer taking an 8-3 decision at number three. The teams split the singles matches with Sharda winning at number one, 6-4, 6-2, Acaroglu taking the match at number three, 6-4, 6-2, and Belandres coming up victorious at number five, 1-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-5).
• Acaroglu leads the team with a 10-0 singles record (8-0 at No. 4), while Ganchev is 8-2 (7-1 at No. 3), and Belandres is 8-2 (mostly at Nos. 5 & 6). First-year Javier Gonzalez is 7-3 (5-1 at No. 5) and Sharda is 7-5 overall (6-5 at No. 1). Acaroglu and Vuksanovic are 8-4 in the first flight doubles, Belandres and Sharda are 10-2 at No. 2 and Ganchev and Moldenhauer are 10-3 at No. 3 for a combined 28-9 in doubles.
IN THE RECORD BOOK
• Babson's 15 victories surpasses the 2014-15 (14-4) and 2018-19 (14-5) squads for the program's single-season record for victories
• The 13 straight wins for the Beavers breaks the program record of 11 consecutive victories posted by the 1996-97 squad.
RANKED OPPONENTS
• The Green and White is 5-0 this season against teams ranked in the top 40 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), defeating No. 22 Rensselaer, No. 22 Pomona-Pitzer, No. 31 Brandeis, No. 20 Colby and No. 36 MIT.
NEWMAC HONORS
• Weisman was selected as the NEWMAC Singles Athlete of the Week on Monday, the fourth Babson player to earn the top singles honor this season.
• Weisman dropped just one game over two matches to help Babson to a pair of NEWMAC wins. He won 6-0, 6-0 at number two in Wednesday's 9-0 victory over Wheaton and followed it up with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Coast Guard at number five on Saturday in a 7-2 triumph.
BABSON STREAKS
• Utrilla has won nine straight singles matches, including his last seven in straight sets.
• Law has won his last eight in doubles with four different teammates and Conlin has won six in a row in doubles.
• In addition to being 7-1 in singles this year, Zhang has won his last seven and 11 of his 12 doubles matches with four different teammates.
BEAVER BITES
• Babson is 14-2 at both number one and number two doubles this season.
• The Beavers have captured at least five singles encounters in 13 of the 16 team matches.
• The Green and White are 13-0 against Division III opponents this year, 2-0 against Division II foes, and 0-1 against its only Division I opponent, Boston College.
