SERIES HISTORY
• Babson is 24-0 all-time against Emerson in a series that dates back to 2011.
LAST MEETING
• Senior Jackson Kelly matched the program record with six hits and drove in a career-high six runs to help Babson complete a three-game sweep of Emerson with an 18-6 eight-inning win in game two of a doubleheader on April 16, 2022, in Lynn, Mass.
• Junior Tanner Santos doubled, triple, walked twice and scored a pair of runs, while graduate student Jack Pirkl and sophomore Walter Sadowsky finished with two hits apiece for the Beavers, who scored in every inning but the second.
• Graduate student Quinton Copeland went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and three runs scored, while senior Thai Morgan tripled and drove in a pair of runs for the Lions, who scored four times in the first inning.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• Babson (15-9, 4-2 NEWMAC) bounced back from Tuesday's loss at Coast Guard with an 11-7 victory over Southern Maine on Thursday afternoon.
• Senior Michael Cook, classmate Michael O'Brien and junior Brant Savage each had two hits and combined to drive in four runs for the Beavers, who took an early 3-0 lead and then erased a 5-4 deficit with a six-run sixth inning.
• First-year Ryan Hvozdovic is batting .391 with five extra-base hits, 19 RBI and 20 runs scored, Savage is hitting .351 with five doubles, six home runs and 26 runs batted in, and Cook enters the series with a .340 average to go along with five extra-base hits and 20 runs batted in.
• Senior Tim Noone (3-1, 1.25 ERA) has recorded 53 strikeouts while issuing just five walks in 43.1 innings, classmate Anthony St. John is 4-0 with a 2.20 earned run average in 32.2 innings pitched and senior Tim Person (0-2) has allowed just one hit and one unearned run over his last 6.1 innings out of the bullpen.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
• Emerson (14-12, 2-4 NEWMAC) followed up Tuesday's 14-3 win over WPI with a 13-4 loss at Wesleyan on Thursday.
• Copeland went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and sophomore Briggs Loveland was 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI for the Lions, who have already recorded their most wins in over a decade.
• Senior Jake Hatch is batting .367 with four doubles, three triples, six homers, 24 RBI and 28 runs scored, Loveland is hitting .366 with seven extra-base hits and 28 runs batted in, and Copeland enters the series with a .303 average to go along with eight extra-base hits, 12 RBI and 30 runs scored.
• Junior Chris Lowe (2-2, 3.56 ERA) has recorded 42 strikeouts in 43.0 innings, first-year Angelo Deer (2-3) owns a 3.86 earned run average and 29 strikeouts against just six walks in 37.1 innings, and senior AJ Ortega is 4-0 with a 3.98 ERA in 31.2 innings of work this spring.
PITCHING PROWESS
• The Beavers enter the weekend ranked first in Division III in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.71) and walks allowed per nine innings (1.57), second in WHIP (1.14) and are also 28th in team ERA (3.85) and 44th in hits allowed per nine innings (8.72).
• Individually, Noone ranks second nationally in WHIP (0.62), 10th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (10.60), 11th in hits allowed per nine innings (4.57) and 18th in ERA (1.25), while St. John is fifth in walks per nine innings (0.55) and seventh strikeout-to-walk ratio (11.00).
HVOZDOVIC, SPALTER SWEEP NEWMAC WEEKLY HONORS
• Hvozdovic batted .524 (11-for-21) with one double, seven RBI and six runs scored on the way to earning conference player of the week honors, while junior Tristen Spalter was selected as the league's pitcher of the week following his 10-strikeout performance against Coast Guard last Tuesday.
LION HUNTERS
• Kelly batted .643 (9-for-14) with three doubles, eight RBI and seven runs scored in last year's three-game series, while Santos went 5-for-9 (.556) with three doubles, a triple, seven walks and seven runs scored last season against Emerson.
• Noone tossed 6.0 shutout innings allowing just three hits while striking out seven in game one of last year's series and St. John followed it up with 7.2 innings in game two giving up just two earned runs while fanning a career-high 11 batters.
HOT AT THE PLATE
• In five starts going back to April 3, O'Brien is batting .409 (9-for-22) with five doubles and eight runs batted in.
• For the season, he is hitting .381 with six doubles and 14 runs batted in in 12 starts.
BEAVER BITES
• Savage and O'Brien both extended their respective hitting streaks to five games on Thursday, while Cook has reached base in eight consecutive outings.
• Hvozdovic (11) and Savage (10) lead the Green and White in multi-hit games.
• Santos has reached base in 22 of the last 23 games and leads the NEWMAC in both walks (23) and stolen bases (12).
• Pirkl, who is riding a three-game hitting streak, recorded his first career triple on Tuesday at Coast Guard.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
• The Beavers are 13-1 on the year when scoring at least six runs.
• Babson is also 13-1 this spring when leading after six innings.
