Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.), classmate Michael O'Brien (Medford, Mass.) and junior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) all finished with two hits apiece and Babson College scored six times in the sixth inning to rally for an 11-7 win over the University of Southern Maine in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Govoni Field.
With its seventh win over the last eight games, Babson improves to 15-9 on the year. Southern Maine, which had its seven-game winning streak halted, slips to 9-13 overall.
O'Brien doubled twice and scored twice, Cook had two singles and two RBI and Savage was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Beavers, who had six players record a hit and drive in a run in the victory. Sophomore Cole Velis (Lexington, Mass.) allowed two runs over 3.0 innings and earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Junior Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine) went 4-for-4- with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored, while senior Tom Vesosky (Colchester, Vt.) was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI for the Huskies, who finished with 15 hits. First-year Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine) hit a solo homer and senior Jonathan Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored in the loss.
Trailing 5-4 going to the bottom of the sixth, the Green and White sent 11 men to the plate and scored six times to take the lead for good. O'Brien tied the game with an RBI double down the left field line, senior Jackson Kelly (Wenonah, N.J.) drove in graduate student Ryan Noone (Belmont, Mass.) to make it 6-5 two batters later and Savage looped another single into center bringing home O'Brien for a two-run lead. Cook followed up an RBI ground out by first-year Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) with an RBI knock through left side and Savage raced home on a passed ball to cap the rally extending the margin to 11-5.
Babson got an RBI single from Cook and took advantage of three Southern Maine errors to jump in front 3-0 in the bottom of the first. Vesosky capped a three-run second for the visitors with a two-out, two-run single to right to make it 3-3, and the Huskies took their first lead on Seymour's RBI base hit to right center in the third.
Southern Maine pushed its advantage to 5-3 in the fifth thanks to a leadoff homer by Douin. The Beavers responded in the bottom half of the frame as junior Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) led off with a double and scored on one batter later on an RBI single to left by classmate Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) to get within 5-4.
Junior Lucas Francis (Lisbon, Maine) suffered the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year for the Huskies after giving up four runs on five hits in an inning of relief.
Babson opens a three-game series with Emerson on Friday at 2 p.m. in Brockton, Mass., while Southern Maine travels to Eastern Connecticut State for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m.
