Coast Guard Stops Baseball's Six-Game Winning Streak, 7-1

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Senior Blake Carroll (Land O'Lakes, Fla.) went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three runs batted in and first-year Harrison Milbert (Kingston, Mass.) allowed just one run over six innings as the Coast Guard Academy defeated Babson College, 7-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Nitchman Field.

With the loss, Babson had its six-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 14-9 overall and 4-2 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard won its second in a row to improve to 9-12 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Coast Guard earned a split in the season series after Babson won last Tuesday's encounter, 2-1.

Senior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) belted his first home run of the season to account for the lone Babson run. Junior Luca Rubin (Los Angeles, Calif.) had two hits, graduate student Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, N.Y.) tripled, and junior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) and first-year Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) each singled in the setback. Junior Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) struck out six but was tagged for five runs (four earned) in 6.1 innings and took the loss.

Junior John Carroll (Yardley, Pa.) had three hits and an RBI, classmate Greg Boland (Acworth, Ga.) had a single and a double and drove in two, and first-year Tyler Michalek (Fort Worth, Texas) had a double among his two hits in the Bears' 13-hit attack. Milbert surrendered just three hits and two walks to record his first career win, and junior Charles Red (Panama City, Fla.) and first-year Raymond Priddy (Chico, Calif.) combined to throw three scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, to secure the victory.

After Carroll homered in the first inning for Coast Guard, Babson evened the score with one out in the top of the fourth when Cook went deep for his fifth career four-bagger. The Bears answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on singles by Carroll, Michalek and Boland, and tacked on another run in the fifth inning on singles by Blake Carroll, first-year Richard Barkley (Bellevue, Wash.) and John Carroll.

Coast Guard piled on two more runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings. Blake Carroll cracked a two-run home run in the seventh and Boland sparked the eighth inning rally with an RBI double to center.

Babson returns home for a non-conference game Thursday against Southern Maine at 3:30 p.m. at Govoni Field. Coast Guard opens a three-game NEWMAC series against Clark on Friday at home at 3:30 p.m.
