SERIES HISTORY
• Babson is 65-23 all-time against Coast Guard in a series that dates back to 1978.
• The Beavers have won 12 of the last 13 games between the teams going back to 2016, which includes five of their last six games in New London, Conn.
• The Green and White has allowed four runs or fewer in each of its last nine games against Coast Guard.
LAST MEETING
• Senior Michael O'Brien's double to the gap in right center scored classmate Michael Cook from second to lift the Beavers to a 2-1 win over Coast Guard last Tuesday in Babson Park.
• First-years Ryan Hvozdovic and Chris Basile both recorded two hits, junior Luca Rubin added an RBI double and classmate Tristen Spalter struck out a career-high 10 batters over 8.0 innings for the Beavers.
• First-year Harrison Milbert gave up one run on five hits while striking out two over 7.0 innings for the Bears, who stranded six runners on base over the first five frames.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• Babson (14-8, 4-1 NEWMAC) has won 12 of its last 13 games and completed a sweep of WPI on Saturday with a 10-3 victory in game two.
• Hvozdovic, Basile and junior Tanner Santos all recorded three hits and combined to drive in five runs, while senior Anthony St. John improved to 4-0 by striking out five and allowing just one run over 7.0 innings for the Beavers, who had six different players drive in a run.
• Hvozdovic is batting .423 with five extra-base hits, 18 RBI And 19 runs scored, Basile is hitting .349 with four extra-base hits, seven stolen bases, 18 runs scored and 13 runs driven in, and junior Brant Savage enters the week with a .345 average to go along with five doubles, six homers and 25 RBI.
• Spalter (2-1, 2.68 ERA) has 33 strikeouts and just four walks in 40.1 innings, senior Stephen McLendon is 2-0 with one save and 11 strikeouts in 12.2 innings out of the bullpen, and classmate Tim Person has allowed just one unearned run and one hit over his last six relief appearances.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
• Coast Guard (8-12, 1-4 NEWMAC) earned a split and picked up its first conference win by defeating Emerson, 7-6, in game two of Saturday's doubleheader in Brockton, Mass.
• Junior Charles Red went 3-for-4 and first-year Richard Barkley capped a three-run rally in the top of the ninth inning with a two-run single to center for the Bears, who got two shutout innings of relief from sophomore Aidan Andersen.
• Sophomore Jack Steel is batting .394 with five extra-base-hits and 15 runs batted in, senior Blake Carroll is hitting .349 with seven doubles, three homers, 15 RBI and 21 runs scored, and Barkley enters the day with a .276 average to go along with five doubles, dour home runs and 15 runs batted in.
• Andersen is 2-0 with two saves and a 3.63 ERA in 17.1 innings of relief, first-year Tyler Michalek is 0-3 with a 4.20 earned run average in seven appearances out of the bullpen and Red is 1-1 with a 5.51 ERA in 16.1 innings of work this spring.
PITCHING PROWESS
• The Beavers enter the week ranked first in Division III in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.71), WHIP (1.12) and walks allowed per nine innings (1.57), and are also 26th in team ERA (3.73) and 38th in hits allowed per nine innings (8.48).
• Individually, senior Tim Noone ranks third nationally in WHIP (0.62), 12th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (10.60) and 18th in ERA (1.25), while St. John is eighth in walks per nine innings (0.55) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (11.00).
• Spalter also ranks 19th in walks per nine innings (0.89) and 23rd in strikeout-to-walk ratio (8.25).
HVOZDOVIC, SPALTER SWEEP NEWMAC WEEKLY HONORS
• Hvozdovic batted .524 (11-for-21) with one double, seven RBI and six runs scored on the way to earning conference player of the week honors, while Spalter was selected as the league's pitcher of the week following his 10-strikeout performance against Coast Guard last Tuesday.
SETTING THE TABLE
• Santos has reached base in 22 consecutive outings going back to the final game of last season in the leadoff spot and enters the week ranked first in the NEWMAC with 23 walks and 12 stolen bases.
• He also ranks fourth in the league with 24 runs scored and his .485 on-base percentage is good for sixth in the NEWMAC.
BEAVER BITES
• Hvozdovic is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak while Basile has at least one hit in eight consecutive starts.
• O'Brien is batting .438 (7-for-16) with three doubles and seven driven in during the Beavers' current six-game winning streak.
• Savage leads the NEWMAC in total bases (55) and is second in both home runs and RBI. He also leads the Green and White with nine multi-RBI games this spring.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
• Babson is 12-3 when scoring the first run of the game this spring.
• The Beavers are 12-1 on the year and 29-3 since the start of the 2022 campaign when leading after six innings.
• The Green and White has scored at least six runs in 12 of its 14 wins this season.
• Babson is 10-1 when finishing with at least 10 hits and 13-2 when recording two or more extra-base hits.
