Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) raced home on classmate Chris Basile's (Miami Beach, Fla.) bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th as Babson College defeated visiting Roger Williams University, 4-3, in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Govoni Field.
With its fifth straight win, Babson improves to 8-7 on the year. Roger Williams has dropped two straight contests to slip to 3-12 overall.
Senior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with a run scored, Hvozdovic and Basile both singled and scored and first-year Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) drove in a run and scored for the Beavers. Sophomore Cole Velis (Lexington, Mass.) struck out the side in the 10th to earn his first career win, while first-year James Clark (Southborough, Mass.) struck out four and gave up just two hits over 6.0 innings in his first career start on the mound.
Senior Matt Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) and junior Nick Zobian (Califon, N.J.) both had two hits, while fellow junior Jack Morin (North Andover, Mass.) hit a two-run homer for the Hawks. Sophomore Lucas Lariviere (Cumberland, R.I.) settled for a no-decision after striking out five and allowing just one earned run over 8.0 innings.
The Green and White broke a scoreless deadlock with a double steal in the fifth and Cook raced home on a throwing error in the sixth to make it 2-0. Roger Williams rallied in the top of the eighth though, as senior Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) scored after a leadoff walk to cut the deficit to 2-1 and Morin followed with a two-run blast to right to take a 3-2 lead.
The Beavers went down in order in the eighth but used a Basile single, and back-to-back walks to sophomore Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) and junior Luca Rubin (Los Angeles, Calif.) to load the bases with one out in the ninth. Teator reached on a fielder's choice allowing Basile to score sending the game to extra innings.
Velis needed just 13 pitches to strikeout the side in order in the top of the 10th and loaded the bases with one out thanks to singles by junior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) and Cook and a walk to graduate Ryan Noone (Belmont, Mass.). Basile drilled a 1-1 down the third base line that hopped off the heel of Massaro at third to bring Hvozdovic home with the winning run.
Sophomore Louis Mosca (Old Tappan, N.J.) shouldered the loss for the Hawks to fall to 1-1 on the year.
Both teams are set to play doubleheaders on Sunday as Babson travels to Springfield at 12 p.m. while Roger Williams takes on Suffolk beginning at 10:30 a.m.
