Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Juniors Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) and Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) homered and classmate Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) pitched seven strong innings as Babson College defeated Suffolk University, 7-2, in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field.
With the win, Babson posted its fifth straight victory to even its record at 7-7 while Suffolk fell back to the .500 mark at 6-6.
Santos, senior Michael O'Brien (Medford, Mass.) and first-year Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) all had two hits and an RBI and Savage scored twice and knocked in two to lead the Beavers. Graduate student Ryan Noone (Belmont, Mass.) and first-year Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) also drove in a run in the victory.
Spalter pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out six to improve to 2-1 on the season. He got out of trouble in the first and third innings, stranding runners at second and third in both frames after recording a strikeout to end the inning. Seniors Tim Person (Hudson, Mass.) and Stephen McLendon (Nashua, N.H.) each threw a shutout inning in relief to close out the win.
Each of the first eight hitters in the Suffolk lineup had hits to account for the eight hits by the visitors. Graduate student Michael Cole (Plainview, N.Y.), juniors Jonny Gilbride (Beverly, Mass.) and Garret Roberts (Stratham, N.H.) and senior Luke Harder (Liverpool, N.Y.) all had doubles and Cole and grad student Michael James (Norwood, Mass.) drove in runs in the setback.
Sophomore Harry Painter (Essex, Mass.) and senior Caleb Piwnicki (Alton, N.H.) pitched four innings each for the Rams. Painter allowed three runs on just two hits but walked six and suffered the loss.
Babson struck for three runs in the first inning. After Savage walked and stole second, Hvozdovic singled him home. Painter then issued four straight walks that brought home two more runs before inducing an inning-ending double play.
The Beavers doubled their lead in the fifth inning. Santos led off with a single to right and Savage followed with his sixth home run of the season to left center. Hvozdovic then singled and stole second and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Noone.
Suffolk got on the board with two runs in the top of the seventh. Armbruster singles and scored on a double by Cole, who later came home on a sacrifice fly by James. Babson got one back in the bottom half of the inning on Santos' leadoff home run to right center, his first of the season.
Babson is right back in action on Thursday, hosting Roger Williams at 3:30 p.m. at Govoni Field to wrap up a five-game home stand. Suffolk travels to Roger Williams on Saturday for a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader as 12 p.m.
