Box Score 2 BABSON PARK, Mass.—Babson College got strong starting pitching from seniors Tim Noone (Needham, Mass.) and Anthony St. John (Hopewell, N.J.) and pounded out 24 hits on the way to sweeping both ends of a doubleheader against Salem State University in non-conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Govoni Field.
The Beavers won the opener 7-2 and defeated the Vikings, 10-2, in game two to run its winning streak to four while pushing their overall mark to 6-7. Salem State is now 2-10 on the season.
Game 1: Babson 7, Salem State 2
Senior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead five players with multiple hits and classmate Michael O'Brien (Medford, Mass.) doubled and drove in two runs to lead the Beavers. Fellow senior Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, N.Y.), junior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) and first-years Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) each had two hits in support of Noone, who recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts while giving up just one run on five hits over 7.0 innings.
Juniors Edward Field (Gloucester, Mass.) and Conor Dolan (Rockland, Mass.) both doubled and finished the day with two hits to lead Salem State. Senior Brock Pare (Lowell, Mass.) shouldered the loss to drop to 0-2 after allowing two earned runs on nine hits and five walks over 4.1 innings.
The Green and White took a 2-0 lead in the fourth as Pirkl reached with a two-out infield single and both senior Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.) and O'Brien came home on a throwing error. Dolan cut the Vikings' deficit to 2-1 with an RBI double down the right field line in the top of the fifth but Babson regained a two-run lead in the bottom of the frame as Savage led off with a single and scored two batters later on Cook's RBI knock to center.
The Beavers put the game away with a four-run uprising in the sixth. Pirkl led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Savage, junior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) drew a walk and came home on another sacrifice fly by Hvodovic, and O'Brien plated two more runs with a two-out double to left to make it 7-1.
Noone retired the final eight hitters he faced and struck out the side in order in the seventh.
Game 2: Babson 10, Salem State 2
Savage went 3-for-5 with a grand slam and a career-high five RBI, graduate student Ryan Noone (Belmont, Mass.) hit a two-run homer and Santos went 2-for-4 with a pair of walks and two-runs scored to lead the Babson offense. Junior Luca Rubin (Los Angeles, Calif.) also went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in support of St. John, who improved to 2-0 after giving up one run on five hits to go along with four strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
Junior Jake Boucher (Wallingford, Conn.), who went 2-for-4, and graduate student Brahiam Ortega (Lawrence, Mass.) both hit solo homers for the Vikings. Sophomore Mason Consigli (Northbridge, Mass.) dropped to 0-3 on the year after allowing six runs on six hits in 4.1 innings.
Consigli walked three in the bottom of the second and Savage made him pay with out a two-out grand slam to left, the first of his career, to give the Beavers a 4-0 lead. Rubin plated Noone with a two-out double to right center in the third and the Green and White tacked on two more runs in the fifth thanks to a two-out infield single by Savage and a wild pitch that brought home Rubin to extend the margin to 7-0.
Ortega got Salem State on the board with a solo shot to right in the top of the sixth but Noone answered with a two-run blast, his second of the year, in the bottom of the frame to make it 9-1.
Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Suffolk at 3:30 p.m., while Salem State travels to Keene State on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are now 8-6 all-time against Salem State and have won six consecutive games in the series since 2017.
• Babson is now 16-3 at home over the last two seasons.
• Cook had his 13-game hitting streak snapped but has reached base safely in 14 consecutive outings going back to last year.
• Savage now has a 10-game hitting streak, which includes four straight multi-hit games, and Santos has reached base in 13 contests in a row going back to last May.
