SERIES HISTORY
• Babson is 6-6 all-time against Salem State in a series that dates back to 1989.
• The Beavers have won four straight against the Vikings since 2017 on the heels of dropping three in a row in the series from 2013-16.
• The Green and White are 3-2 against Salem State in Babson Park dating back to 1995.
LAST MEETING
• Visiting Babson rallied from an early deficit with eight unanswered runs to win the opener, 9-6, and got six shutout innings from senior Tim Noone in game two to complete a sweep of Salem State, 7-1, on March 26, 2022 in Salem, Mass.
• Thomas Lapham '22 went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, classmate Sean Burychka '22 doubled twice and drove in two runs, and senior Michael Cook singled twice and led all players with three RBI for the Beavers in the opener. Graduate student Jack Pirkl doubled, scored twice and drove in two, while junior Brant Savage went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
• Cook hit a two-run homer, Lapham finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Josh Yellen '22 went 3-for-5 with two RBI to pace the Beavers' 13-hit attack in the nightcap. Noone tossed six shutout frames allowing just three hits and recording a career-high eight strikeouts, while sophomore Griffin Cofsky fanned three over the final three innings to earn his first career save.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• Babson (4-7) posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2014, blanking Wooster 16-0 on the final day of the Florida trip on March 16 and shutting down Nichols 7-0 in the home opener on Wednesday.
• Savage homered for the second game in a row and junior Tristen Spalter earned his first victory of the season with six shutout innings in the win over Nichols. Savage finished 2-for-5 with two runs and Cook and junior Tanner Santos both went 2-for-4 with a run scored to pace the Beavers' 11-hit attack. First-year Chris Basile also had two hits, including a double, and was one of four players to drive in a run in the win.
• First-year Ryan Hvozdovic (.382) has two doubles, two home runs and seven runs batted in, Cook (.381) has two doubles and nine RBI and Savage (.326) has two doubles to go along with team-highs of four homers and 10 RBI. Basile (.364, 2 doubles, 1 HR) and junior Ike Kiely (.355, 3 doubles) are also batting over .300 with three extra-base hits and five RBI apiece.
• Noone (1-0, 0.84 ERA) has recorded 24 strikeouts against just two walks in 21.1 innings, senior Anthony St. John is 1-0 with a 2.92 ERA in three appearances and Spalter is 1-1 with a 3.55 ERA and 17 Ks in 25.1 innings over four starts.
SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
• Salem State (3-7), which hosts Wheaton on Friday before coming to Babson, is looking to snap a four-game skid after Tuesday's 14-6 loss to Gordon in the home opener at the Central Campus Field. Both Viking victories came over SUNY Plattsburgh in Myrtle Beach, S.C., 6-2 and 2-0, on March 14 and 16.
• First-year Devin Fuegen had three hits, including a home run, and drove in two in the loss to Gordon. Junior Edward Field had two hits, including a double and an RBI, and first-year Owen Duggan and grad student Brahiam Ortega also had two hits apiece. Grad student Carl Beatrice did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out five.
• Duggan (.406) has a team-high 13 hits, including a double and a triple, while Fuegen (.368) has belted two home runs and Field (.364) has three doubles and a triple and shares the team RBI lead (5) with junior Conor Dolan.
• Beatrice (3.12 ERA) has fanned 10 batters in 8.2 innings of relief, while junior Jack Sefrino (0-2, 8.53 ERA) is the only Viking to start two games. Junior Jake Usenia (1-0, 8.68 ERA) earned a win with four scoreless innings on 3-hit pitching against Plattsburgh, and Kyle Banche (1-0, 7.88 ERA) went 3.2 innings of scoreless relief for his win over Plattesburgh.
NOONE EARNS NEWMAC RECOGNITION
• After striking out 10 and allowing just two hits over 7.1 shutout innings on March 16 against Wooster, Noone was selected as the NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
• It was the second league pitcher of the week award of the spring for Noone, who ranks fourth in Division III in WHIP (0.47) and ninth in hits allowed per nine innings (3.38).
STREAKING BEAVERS
• Cook has a hit in 12 consecutive games going back to last season, while Savage enters the weekend riding an eight-game hitting streak and an 11-game on-base streak.
• Santos has reached base safely in 10 straight outings, which includes drawing at least one base on balls in six consecutive games.
• Basile has a hit in five straight contests and first-year Zander Teator has walked in three consecutive starts.
THE FRIENDLY CONFINES
• Babson's win over Nichols on Wednesday was the fifth consecutive victory in the home opener going back to 2018.
• The Beavers went 13-3 at Govoni Field last season and have gone 49-11 at home dating back to the start of the 2018 campaign.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
• The Beavers entered the week ranked first in Division III with a .669 strength of schedule, which is comprised using opponents winning percentage and opponents' opponents winning percentage.
• Babson has scored at least six runs in each of its last nine victories going back to last April.
• The Green and White is 3-1 this season and 21-5 going back to the start of last year when recording at least 10 hits.
