Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) homered for the second game in a row and classmate Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) earned his first victory of the season with six shutout innings on the mound as Babson College defeated visiting Nichols College, 7-0 in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field.
With its second consecutive win, Babson improves to 4-7 on the year while Nichols drops to 1-10 overall.
Savage finished 2-for-5 with two runs and senior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) and junior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) both went 2-for-4 with a run scored to pace the Beavers' 11-hit attack. First-year Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) also had two hits, including a double, and was one of four players to drive in a run in the win.
Spalter struck out two and gave up five hits over 6.0 innings to improve to 1-1 and a trio of relievers followed with three scoreless innings as Babson recorded it second consecutive shutout for the first time since 2014.
Junior Andrew Croteau (Reading, Mass.) went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Bison. Classmate John Pollock (Northford, Conn.) shouldered the loss and dropped to 0-2 on the year after giving up two runs on three hits over 3.0 innings.
The Green and White stranded runners in each of the first two innings before taking a 2-0 lead on Savage's two-run blast to left in the bottom of the third. The Beavers pushed their advantage to 3-0 in the fourth as Cook legged out an infield single and stole second before eventually scoring on a double steal with two outs.
Babson added to its lead with three more runs in the fifth after sending eight batters to the plate. Junior Ike Kiely (Falmouth, Mass.) drove in first-year Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) with an RBI single to center and later scored on consecutive wild pitches to make it 5-0. Basile capped the rally with a double to right center that drove in graduate student Ryan Noone (Belmont, Mass.) extending the margin to 6-0.
The Green and White tacked on its final run in the eighth when Savage came home on Noone's double to the gap in left center.
Spalter retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced and worked out of trouble in the top of the sixth with a 6-4-3 double play and a strikeout after allowing consecutive singles to start the frame. Sophomore Luke McClintock (South Hamilton, Mass.) worked a perfect seventh inning and classmate Matt Milone (Amston, Conn.) escaped a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the eighth with a force out at the plate followed by back-to-back strikeouts.
Senior Tim Person (Hudson, N.H.) needed to throw just six pitches to retire the Bison in order in the ninth.
Babson is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Salem State in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. while Nichols travels to Clark on Thursday at 3 p.m.
