Baseball Edged by Stevens (N.J.) in 10 Innings, 3-2

Box Score

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.—Junior Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) allowed just one run on two hits and a walk through eight innings, but Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) captured a 3-2 victory over Babson College in 10 innings Wednesday afternoon in the Snowbird Baseball Classic at Centennial Park Field 10.

With the setback, Babson slid to 1-5 on the Florida trip and 2-7 overall while Stevens won its third straight to wrap up its Florida trip at 3-2 and improved to 9-5 overall.

Spalter matched his season high with six strikeouts but suffered a no-decision. Senior Tim Person (Hudson, Mass.) issued two walks and an unearned run with one strikeout in an inning of relief and sophomore Matt Milone (Amston, Conn.) took the loss after giving up one run on two hits in the 10th. Senior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) had two hits for the Beavers, junior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) had a triple and an RBI and scored a run, and graduate student Ryan Noone (Belmont, Mass.) also drove in a run.

The Ducks finished with just four hits, two each by seniors Ben Tobio (Sarasota, Fla.) and Chris Davis (Gilbertsville, Pa.), and Tobio, sophomore Victor Schilleci (Mandeville, La.) and junior Jack Irby (Raleigh, N.C.) each drove in a run. Senior Mark DeCicco (Windermere, Fla.) had a strong start, giving up just one run on two hits and two walks in six innings with six Ks, while junior Axel Johnson (Grafton, Mass.) allowed one run on two hits in 2.1 innings of relief and first-year Erik Sibbach (Boxford, Mass.) gave up just one hit in 1.2 scoreless innings to record the win.

The Beavers jumped on top in the first inning when first-year Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) singled, stole second and later scored on Savage's sacrifice fly. The Ducks evened the score in the fourth inning when Tobio led off with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and came home on a Schilleci sac fly.

Those were the only two runs scored in the first eight innings. Stevens pulled ahead with a run in the top of the ninth as an error, a hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases and Irby drew another walk to push a run across the plate. Person got the next batter on a groundout to prevent further damage.

The Beavers answered in the bottom of the ninth when Savage led off with a triple to center field and scooted home on an infield grounder. Cook and senior Michael O'Brien (Medford, Mass.) followed with singles and first-year Zander Teator (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) walked to load the bases but Sibbach struck out the next batter to force extra innings.

The Ducks pulled ahead again in the top of the 10th on Tobio's RBI single before the Beavers threw out a runner at home to prevent another run. The Green and White were retired in a row in the bottom of the 10th to suffer the setback.

The Beavers wrap up the Florida trip on Thursday with an encounter against Wooster (Ohio) at 10 a.m. in a rematch of Sunday's 15-13 victory by the Fighting Scots.
