Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas—After having Friday's opener pushed back a day, Babson College dropped both ends of a doubleheader at No. 5 D3baseball.com/No. 3 Collegiate Baseball Trinity University on Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers (0-2) suffered a 6-1 loss in game one of the doubleheader and were beaten 3-2 by the Tigers (5-3) in the nightcap. The teams will conclude their weekend series on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.
Game 1: Trinity 6, Babson 1
Junior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) went 2-for-4 and senior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) doubled and drove in a run for the Beavers, who were limited to just five hits. Senior Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.) and junior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) both singled, while senior Jackson Kelly (Wenonah, N.J.) walked and scored in the loss.
Junior Christian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas) homered as part of a three-hit day and drove in a pair of runs, while senior Ezra Gore (Dallas, Texas) went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored to pace Trinity. Junior Joseph Chavana (Laredo, Texas) allowed just one run on three hits while striking out four and walking four over 7.0 innings to improve to 1-2 on the year.
Holloway led off the bottom of the first with a homer to left to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead and came through with a two-out RBI single to left to make it 3-0 in the last of the fifth. Trinity busted the game open with a three-run sixth as Gore drove in a pair of runs with a double to right center and then scored on an RBI ground out by senior Michael Montrezza (Los Gatos, Calif.) extending the lead to 6-0.
The Beavers, who stranded five runners over the first five innings, broke up the shutout in the top of the eighth as Kelly reached on a fielder's choice and came all the way around to score from first on Cook's two-out double to right center.
Junior Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) suffered the loss for Babson after giving up six runs on seven hits while striking out three over 5.0 innings. First-year Connor Doan (Pasadena, Texas) fanned four in three shutout innings of relief in his collegiate debut.
Game 2: Trinity 3, Babson 2
Cook went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and Santos and Manning both scored in the one-run loss. Senior Tim Noone (Needham, Mass.) struck out five and allowed just two earned runs on four hits over 7.0 innings in a no-decision.
Gore went 2-for-3 with a run scored and junior Kai Tinker (Simi Valley, Calif.) doubled and scored a run for Trinity in support of classmate Cade McGahan (Davidson, N.C.), who settled for a no-decision after giving up just two runs on five hits to go along with five strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. Junior Harrison Durow (Dallas, Texas) improved to 1-1 with the win after striking out four and allowing just one hit in two innings out of the bullpen.
Santos walked to lead off the game, stole second and raced home on Cook's two-out infield single to give the Green and White a 1-0 lead. The Tigers went in front in the bottom of the second as Tinker led off the frame with a double and scored on a balk, while Gore reached on a bunt single and later came home on junior Austin Davison's (Park City, Utah) sacrifice fly to right.
The Beavers pulled even when Manning scored on Cook's two-out infield single in the top of the third before both pitchers took over. Noone retired 13 of 15 hitters over the middle innings, which included striking out the side in the sixth, while McGahan allowed just two baserunners over his final four innings of work.
The hosts took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth as Holloway hit his second homer of the day, a one-out solo blast to left center, to make it 3-2. After retiring the side in order in the top of the eighth, Durow closed the game with back-to-back strikeouts after giving up a one-out single to graduate student Ryan Noone (Belmont, Mass.).
Senior Tim Person (Hudson, Mass.) shouldered the loss for the Beavers after giving up one run in an inning of relief.
