Soffer Matches Beavers' All-Time Combined Wins Mark in Quarterfinal Victory
ROME, Ga.—Sophomore
Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) recorded a straight-set win in singles and teamed with junior
Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) for a second consecutive victory in doubles in the quarterfinals of the ITA Cup at the Rome Tennis Center on Friday.Â
Despite a delay of more than four hours due to rain, the second-seeded pairing of Soffer and Cristiani won the first five games of the opening set and defeated Alisha Chulani and Audrey Yoon of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 6-1, 6-4, to advance to Saturday's semifinals. The victory also helped Soffer tie the program's all-time combined wins record of 107 set by Rebecca Stone '12 back in 2012.Â
The fourth-seed in singles, Cristiani won her quarterfinal match 6-4, 6-1 over Danna Taylor of Carnegie Mellon earlier in the day. She won the final three games of the opening set to erase a 4-3 deficit and then dominated the second set to advance to Saturday's semifinal round.Â
Cristiani will face top-seeded Sylwia Mikos of Chicago at 12 p.m., which will be followed by the doubles semifinals at 2:30 p.m. where Soffer and Cristiani will take on the Chicago pairing of Mikos and Shianna Guo. Should they win, the Beavers' duo would play in the doubles final at 6:30 p.m.Â
