Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Samantha Smith (Greenfield, Mass.) led three players in double figures with 16 points and added season highs of 16 rebounds and five blocked shots to help No. 11 D3hoops.com/No. 11 WBCA Babson College to a 66-50 win over the visiting Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon inside Staake Gymnasium.
Babson improves to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in league play with its eighth straight win, while Coast Guard falls to 8-9 overall and 2-1 in the NEWMAC with its second consecutive loss.
In addition to Smith posting her team-leading fifth double-double, junior Kelly Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.) finished with 14 points and seven rebounds and senior Megan Bauman (East Lyme, Conn.) contributed 10 points, eight boards and five assists to lead the Beavers.
Sophomore Glory Blethen (Boothbay, Maine) scored 16 points, junior Kira Wood (Seattle, Wash.) added 14 points and four assists and sophomore Julia Mann (Central Square, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds to pace the Bears.
Coast Guard trailed by as many as four in the early going before using a 12-4 run that included back-to-back three-pointers by Blethen, a three-point play by Mann and another triple by Wood to take its largest lead of the game at 17-10 with 1:44 to go in the first quarter. The Green and White cut its deficit to one on a pair of occasions early in the second and went in front 21-20 on a jumper by sophomore Abby Miller (Millis, Mass.) with 2:54 to go before halftime. Mann responded with four straight points for the Bears but Miller drilled a trifecta from the left wing to give the hosts a 26-24 edge at the break.
Six points from Smith sparked a 10-0 Babson run to start the third quarter before Coast Guard answered back with 10 of the next 12 points to get within 38-34 on a three-pointer by Wood at the 3:07 mark. The Beavers pushed the margin back to nine late in the period and used a key 9-0 spurt midway through the fourth to put the game away.
Leading 48-42, Bauman canned a three-pointer from the top of the key, Smith grabbed the rebound of her own missed free throw and converted the putback and sophomore Katelyn Mollica (Foxborough, Mass.) buried another triple to make it 57-42 with under four minutes to play.
The Green and White shot just 35.9 percent but went 17-of-21 at the free throw line (81 percent) and scored 19 second-chance points. The Beavers also outscored the Bears 28-4 in the paint and finished with a 55-36 margin on the glass.
Coast Guard knocked down eight three-pointers but shot just 25.4 percent from the floor.
Babson returns to action on Monday when it hosts No. 17/20 Trinity at 6 p.m. while the Bears take on Clark on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
