Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Thomas Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored the go-ahead goal at 19:49 of the second period and first-year Ian Dirscoll (Middleton, Mass.) added a goal and an assist to help 11th-ranked Babson College defeat visiting Elmira College, 4-2, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) on Friday night inside the Babson Skating Center.
Babson, which has won four straight games, improves to 11-4-2 overall and 6-2-2 in league play, while Elmira slips to 8-7-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the NEHC.
First-years Tommy Rooney (Milton, Mass.) and Mike Stevens (Massapequa, N.Y.) each had a goal, while graduate student Max Torrez (Framingham, Mass.), junior Colby Bailey (Southborough, Mass.), sophomore Matt Cormier (Waltham, Mass.) and first-years Nolan Dion (Marshfield, Mass.), Brendan Kennedy (Georgetown, Ontario) and Ryan Murphy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) all recorded an assist for the Beavers. Senior goaltender Nolan Hildebrand (Penticton, British Columbia) made 28 saves and is now 9-1-2 on the year.
Junior Bailey Krawczyk (Elmira, N.Y.) scored twice for the Soaring Eagles, who got 26 saves from first-year Kyle Curtin (St. George, Ontario).
Elmira had what appeared to be the opening goal waved off due to goaltender interference 7:11 into the first period and the Green and White took a 1-0 lead less than two minutes later when Torrez forced a turnover behind the net and Driscoll fed Stevens, who beat Curtin with a one-timer from the slot. The Soaring Eagles pulled even at the 15:16 mark though as Krawczyk tipped home Mastrangeli's shot from the right circle.
The Beavers took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play to go back in front at 12:43 of the second period. Dion collected his own rebound and fed Driscoll, who blistered a shot past Curtin from the bottom of the right circle for his fourth goal of the season. The lead was short-lived however as Krawczyk intercepted a clearing pass at the blue line and beat Hildenbrand for a shorthanded tally to make it 2-2 just over three minutes later.
Elmira had a golden opportunity to go in front with a minute to go in the third but junior Jared Smith (Rochester, N.Y.) missed wide on a 3-on-1 and Babson took advantage by going in front for good when Kramer redirected a centering pass past Curtin at the near post just 11 seconds before the second intermission. The Green and White made it 4-2 just 3:15 into the third when Cormier forced a turnover at center ice to set up Rooney's second goal of the season on a breakaway.
Both teams finished the game with 30 shots on goal. The Green and White was 1-for-5 on the power play and Elmira finished 1-for-4.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as Babson hosts top-ranked Hobart while Elmira travels to Southern Maine.
