Men's Soccer Tops Rutgers-Newark in Season Opener, 3-2

Box Score

EWING, N.J.—Graduate student Ben Williams (Scarborough, Ontario) scored the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute to help lift Babson College to a 3-2 win over Rutgers University-Newark on Saturday night at Lions Stadium.

With the win, Babson opens the season at 1-0 while Rutgers-Newark starts 0-1.

Senior Mitchell Collins (Burlington, Mass.) and junior Samuel Kalishman (Clarksville, Md.) both had a goal, while graduate student Ryan Goss (Glastonbury, Conn.), senior RJ Parrilla (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and junior Shamar Rainford (Randolph, Mass.) each recorded an assist for the Beavers. Sophomore goalkeeper Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made three saves to earn the win in his first collegiate start.

Sophomore Erick Morales (Bound Brook, N.J.) and classmate Jonah Dias (Monroe Township, N.J.) scored for the Scarlet Raiders, who got three saves from senior Christian Andrach (Elmwood Park, N.J.).

Kalishman converted a penalty kick in the 10th minute after senior Jack Dugan (Haddonfield, N.J.) was dragged down in the box, but Babson's lead was quickly erased as Morales drilled a free kick from the top of the box around the Beavers' wall less than three minutes later. Collins put the Green and White back in front in the 30th minute as he buried a feed from Rainford following a service into the box by Parrilla for a 2-1 lead at halftime.

The Scarlet Raiders leveled the match in the 65th minute after earning another free kick from a dangerous position just outside the penalty box. Junior Patrick O'Dwyer's (Long Branch, N.J.) initial shot deflected off the wall but Dias followed with a 20-yard strike inside the left post to make it 2-2.

The Beavers went in front for good with less than 10 minutes to play in regulation as Williams one-touched a cross from Goss past Andrach for the decisive marker.

Babson finished with a 16-9 edge in shots and attempted five of the six corner kicks in the match.

The Beavers return to action on Sunday when they take on TCNJ at 3 p.m., while Rutgers-Newark faces Farmingdale State at 5:30 p.m.
