Women's Volleyball Closes Pacific Coast Classic with Wins over Whitter and Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif.—The Babson College women's volleyball team recorded four-set victories over Whittier College and Pomona-Pitzer College at the Pacific Coast Classic on Saturday afternoon.

The Beavers opened the day with a 25-16, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21 triumph over the Poets and wrapped up their weekend in southern California with a 26-24, 27-29, 25-12, 25-20 win over the Sagehens to improve to 3-1 on the year.

Junior Lauren Gips (Orlando, Fla.) led all players with 14 kills and five blocks, graduate student Izzy Seebold (Concord, N.C.) dished out 47 assists and first-year Roz Cabuena (Kailua, Hawaii) finished with 35 assists to lead the Beavers. First-year Isabella Allen (Williamsville, N.Y.) added 11 kills, junior Lulu McShane (Glencoe, Ill.) contributed 10 kills, and senior Jordan Lapins (Calgary, Alberta) and Olivia Leinenweber (Neptune Beach, Fla.) chipped in with career highs of 17 and 16 digs, respectively.

First-year Cheyanne Ybanez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) finished with 13 kills and 17 digs, while classmate Sofia Zazueta (La Mirada, Calif.) added seven kills and 19 digs to lead the Poets (1-3). Junior Brooke Sasaki (La Palma, Calif.) contributed a team-high 21 digs and senior Della Trimble (Saratoga, Calif.) dished out 16 assists in the loss.

The teams split the first two sets and were deadlocked at 17-17 in the third before the Green and White used kills by McShane, Gips and Allen as well as a block from Seebold as part of a five-point burst to take the lead for good. Gips added another block and first-year Sophia Shaw (Novato, Calif.) followed with an ace to help take a 2-1 advantage.

The fourth set featured 14 ties and five lead changes before the Beavers ended the match with a 6-1 run. McShane tied the game at 20 with a kill, Allen and senior Laura Zuloaga (Naples, Fla.) made it 22-20 with a block and Gips and McShane came through with back-to-back kills to close out the victory.

Babson 3, Pomona-Pitzer 1
Allen and McShane recorded 13 kills apiece, Gips finished with 10 kills and a season-high seven blocks, and Seebold chipped in with 50 assists, four kills, and four blocks to help the Green and White defeat the Sagehens. Senior Lauren MacDonald (Westwood, Mass.) had eight kills in 10 attempts and Cabuena led all players with 26 digs in the victory.

Sophomore Chloe Gill (Oak Park, Ill.) had 12 kills, senior Lauren Asato (Honolulu, Hawaii) contributed 23 digs and sophomore Kylie Mies (Palo Alto, Calif.) dished out 18 assists to lead Pomona-Pitzer (2-2).

The Beavers led 23-18 late in the opening set but needed a pair of late kills by MacDonald to hold on for a 26-24 victory. The Sagehens led by as many as five early in game two and later survived four set points to even the match at a set apiece with a 29-27 triumph.

Babson hit .522 and made just one error while both Gips and sophomore Tatum Stelter (Glendale, Ariz.) served up three aces apiece as part of a dominant third-set performance. The Beaver recorded 15 kills in the fourth set and used a 12-4 run that included kills from six different players to build a 23-15 lead that it would not relinquish en route to closing out the win.

Babson returns to action next Friday when it hosts Bates in its home opener at 6 p.m.

• Saturday's matches against Whitter and Pomona-Pitzer were the first in program history.
• The Beavers are 26-3 in the month of September dating back to 2019.
• With Saturday's victories, Babson is now 47-1 going back to the start of 2019 when limiting its opponents to a hitting percentage below .150.
• The Beavers are 56-5 when recording more kills and 42-2 when finishing with more digs than their foes going back to 2019.
