Women's Volleyball Rallies Past Cal Lutheran, Falls to No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Pacific Coast Classic

CLAREMONT, Calif.—The Babson College women's volleyball team rallied from two sets down to defeat California Lutheran University before falling to No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the opening night of the Pacific Coast Classic inside Roberts Pavilion on Friday.

The Beavers defeated the Regals in five sets, 23-25, 14-25, 25-20, 25-18, 17-15, and suffered a three-set loss (25-11, 25-11, 25-17) to the Athenas.

First-year Isabella Allen (Williamsville, N.Y.) led five players in double figures with 13 kills, classmate Roz Cabuena (Kailua, Hawaii) totaled a team-high 22 digs and graduate student Izzy Seebold (Concord, N.C.) dished out 59 assists and added 10 digs for Babson. Senior Laura Zuloaga (Naples, Fla.) and junior Lauren Gips (Orlando, Fla.) finished with 12 kills apiece, while juniors Erin Gray (Oakland, Calif.) and Lulu McShane (Glencoe, Ill.) contributed 11 kills in the win.

Junior Olivia Leinenweber (Neptune Beach, Fla.) finished with 14 digs and sophomore Tatum Stelter (Glendale, Ariz.) chipped in with 10 for the Beavers.

Senior Maci Haddad (Bakersfield, Calif.) recorded 13 kills, classmate Julia Trento (La Verne, Calif.) led all players with 27 digs and junior Tess Holbert (Oxnard, Calif.) finished with 35 assists, 13 digs and a match-high five service aces to lead Cal Lutheran.

The Regals hit .301 over the first two games and held a 14-9 lead in the third before Babson came alive. Allen recorded four kills and Zuloaga and Gray added two apiece as the Beavers closed the stanza with a 16-6 run to force a fourth set.

The Green and White trailed just once in the fourth and put away 17 kills while hitting .353 to even the match at two sets apiece. Cal Lutheran led 7-3 in the decisive frame before Babson rattled off five straight points to take an 8-7 advantage on a kill by Gray. A kill by Seebold and a service ace by Gips but the Beavers in front 13-12, two kills by McShane made it 16-15 and Gray tacked on another kill on match point to finish off the comeback.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 3, Babson 0
Senior Jordan Lapins (Calgary, Alberta) finished with five kills, Seebold dished out seven assists in the opening set, and Cabuena added a team-high six digs in the loss.

Senior Jenna Holmes (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) led all players with 10 kills and classmate Izzy Sakoda (Honolulu, Hawaii) hit. 500 with eight kills to lead the Athenas. Holmes and sophomore Dede Carranza (Gardena, Calif.) tied for match-high honors with 11 digs, while senior Spencer Hagenbuch (Salinas, Calif.) and junior Georgia McGovern (Oxford, England) doled out 14 and 11 assists, respectively.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (2-0) raced out to a 15-3 lead and hit .435 as a team in the opening game. The Beavers trailed 8-5 in the second before the Athenas ripped off a 9-1 run that included four kills and a block by Holmes to stretch the margin to 17-6.

Babson led 10-9 in the third and got a kill from Lapins to pull even at 11-11 before Claremont-Mudd-Scripps responded with a 9-2 spurt to build a commanding 20-13 edge on the way to closing out the match.

Babson returns to action on Saturday when it takes on Whitter at 2:15 p.m. ET and Pomona-Pitzer at 6:45 p.m. ET.

• Friday's matches were the first all-time against both Cal Lutheran and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
• Babson's victory of Cal Lutheran after dropping the first two sets was its first since October 17, 2017, when it overcame a 2-0 deficit at Springfield.
• Seebold's 59 assists are the most by a Babson setter since November 11, 2017, when Elizabeth Cameron '20 finished with 60 in a five-set win over Clarkson in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
