No. 22 Women's Volleyball Eases Past Mount Holyoke and UMass Dartmouth

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Laura Zuloaga (Naples, Fla.) and junior Lulu McShane (Glencoe, Ill.) combined for 32 kills while hitting .544 to help 22nd-ranked Babson College pick up wins over Mount Holyoke College and UMass Dartmouth in women's volleyball action on Saturday afternoon inside Staake Gymnasium.

Babson, which has won 11 straight matches, improves to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. Mount Holyoke slips to 5-7 overall and 0-3 in the league, while UMass Dartmouth slips to 7-6 on the year.

McShane recorded seven kills on nine swings and Zuloaga added six kills in eight attempts to go along with two blocks apiece for the Beavers, who hit .329 as a team in the win. Junior Caroline Applewhite (Boca Raton, Fla.) dished out a match-high 11 assists and first-year Sophia Shaw (Novato, Calif.) led all players with 13 digs.

Senior Mar Simon (Miami, Fla.) recorded seven kills and seven digs and classmate Marion Abeja (Kumi, Uganda) contributed two kills, 10 assists, five digs and a pair of service aces to lead the Lyons.

The Green and White trailed by as many as four early in the opening stanza before closing the frame with a 12-2 run that included three kills from McShane and two more from first-year Isabella Allen (Williamsville, N.Y.) to pull away from the visitors. The Beavers hit .286 in the second set and scored 11 consecutive points on the serve of sophomore Tatum Stelter (Glendale, Ariz.) to extend a three-point margin to 22-8 on the way to going up 2-0.

Babson raced out to a 15-4 advantage in the third set and finished with 12 kills and no errors in 19 attempts to close out the three-set victory.

Zuloaga and Allen tied for team-high honors with 10 kills, McShane recorded nine kills and senior Jordan Lapins (Calgary, Alberta) chipped in with five kills and 11 digs for the Beavers. Graduate student Izzy Seebold (Concord, N.C.) led all players with 31 assists and five blocks, while Stelter finished with a team-high 14 digs.

Junior Gabriella Monico (Milford, N.H.) put away 11 kills, sophomore Kate Wade (San Clemente, Calif.) added nine kills and 18 digs, and junior Devon Laing (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) chipped in with nine kills for the Corsairs. First-years Emma Rousseau (Seymour, Conn.) and Sabrina Bordone (Massapequa, N.Y.) dished out 18 assists apiece and classmate Emily Pogorelec (Wayne, N.J.) led all players with 24 digs in the loss.

Babson dominated the opening set as it built a 16-5 lead and hit .235 as a team on the way to a 10-point win. Game two featured five ties and five lead changes and UMass Dartmouth got two late kills apiece from Laing and sophomore Chelsea Sanker (Pearland, Texas) to even the match.

The Green and White appeared to be in control of the third set with a 20-14 lead, but the Corsairs used a 7-0 run that included three aces from Pogorelec to go in front 21-20. Allen and McShane sandwiched kills around an ace by Shaw following a timeout, and Zuloaga added two late kills to help the hosts close out the stanza.

Babson was in control throughout the fourth set hitting .500 and totaling 15 kills to finish off the victory.

The Beavers return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Worcester to face WPI at 7 p.m.
