Baseball blanked by Wheaton in NEWMAC series opener, 5-0

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Stephen Quigley (Halifax, Mass.) allowed just three hits in seven shutout innings and sophomore AJ Guindon (Coventry, R.I.) had three hits, an RBI and scored twice as Wheaton College took the opener of a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball series against Babson College, 5-0, Friday afternoon at Govoni Field.

With the win, Wheaton extended its winning streak to 10 games and improved to 23-10 overall and 12-3 in the NEWMAC, while Babson dropped into a tie for first with Wheaton at 12-3 in conference play, 23-11 overall.

Babson managed just five hits on the day, two by first-year Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.), a double by senior Jack Pirkl (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) and singles by senior Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass.) and first-year Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.).

Senior Jake Studley (Barrington, R.I.) had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run for the Lyons. Classmate Zach DeMattio (North Attleboro, Mass.) and first-year Anthony Teberio (Andover, Mass.) each had hits and knocked in a run to spark a 10-hit attack for the visitors.

Quigley retired the first 13 batters he faced before a one-out single to right by Sadowsky in the fifth inning. Pirkl touched him for a one-out double in the sixth and Sadowsky hit a one-out single in the seventh but Quigley got out of trouble on all three occasions. Junior Max Pierce (Scituate, R.I.) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and senior Zach CLesas (Johnston, R.I.) closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.

The Lyons got on the board with a run in the first inning when Guindon hit a lead-off ground-rule double to right center and scored on a double down the left field line by Studley. Wheaton got another one in the third when Studley singled, DeMattio walked, and one out later, Studley scored on a sacrifice bunt by junior Cavan Brady (Great Barrington, Mass.).

Wheaton tacked on two more runs in the seventh. First-year Kevin Matos (Lawrence, Mass.) led off with a triple to right and scored on a single by Guindon, and Guindon later came around on a single to left center by DeMattio. The Lyons added an insurance run in the eighth with singles by Brady and junior Nick Croteau (Cumberland, R.I.) and a sacrifice fly by first-year Anthony Teberio (Andover, Mass.).

Junior Anthony St. John (Hopewell, N.J.) started for Babson and suffered his first loss of the season (4-1) after giving up five runs in seven inning, striking out two. Junior Tim Person (Hudson, Mass.) and first-year Griffin Cofsky (Walpole, Mass.) each pitched one scoreless inning out of the bullpen.

The three-game series continues on Saturday with a doubleheader at Sidell Stadium in Norton, beginning at 12 p.m.

GAME NOTES
• Babson is 31-48 all-time against Wheaton in a series that dates back to 1998.
• Sadowsky extended his hitting streak to a team-high 14 games.
• Lapham singled in the eighth inning to extend his on-base streak to 24 games, but Yellen had his on-base streak stopped at 11 and his hitting streak snapped at 10.
• The Beavers lost at home for just the third in in 14 games this spring.
