Baseball Takes Two from MIT, Extends Home Winning Streak to Nine

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Seniors Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass.) both recorded a pair of multi-hit games and sophomore Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) tossed his first career complete game in the nightcap as Babson College swept visiting MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Govoni Field.

The Beavers won the opener 8-3 and followed it up with an 8-2 victory in game two to improve to 22-9 overall and 11-2 in conference play. The Engineers, who handed Babson its only loss over the last 12 games on Friday, slips to 10-18-1 overall and 5-8 in the NEWMAC.

Game 1: Babson 8, MIT 3
Yellen went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Lapham and sophomore Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) both finished with two hits to pace the Beavers. Junior Tim Noone (Needham, Mass.) won his sixth consecutive decision allowing three runs over 6.2 innings to improve to 6-1 and classmate Stephen McLendon (Nashua, N.H.) recorded all seven batters he faced to record his fifth save of the year.

Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and senior Cory O'Shea (Glen Allen, Va.) homered and drove in a pair of runs for the Engineers. First-year Ethan Siegel (Austin, Texas) suffered the loss to fall to 0-2 after giving up five runs over 2.2 innings.

Yellen gave the Green and White a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first and Lapham followed up an RBI ground out by O'Shea in the top of the second with an infield single that brought home Savage for a 2-1 lead. The Beavers extended the margin to 5-1 in the third as Sadowsky ripped a two-run double down the right field line and senior Andrew Dembowski (Danvers, Mass.) followed with an RBI base hit to left.

O'Shea homered to lead off the fifth and Sonandres plated sophomore Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) with two outs in the seventh to bring MIT within 5-3. Babson responded with a three-run eighth though to put the game out of reach. Yellen led off with a double, sophomore Francis Kiely (Falmouth, Mass.) walked for the fourth time in the game and both players raced home when first-year Justin Guest's (West Windsor, N.J.) sacrifice bunt was misplayed leading to a two-base error.

Game 2: Babson 8, MIT 2
Yellen and Lapham both singled twice, junior Jackson Kelly (Wenonah, N.J.) went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI, and Kiely, Guest and Sadowsky all homered as part of the Beavers' 11-hit attack. Spalter (5-2) was in control through the game on the mound for the Green and White giving up just two runs while striking out five and scattering seven hits.

Schoenfeld and sophomore Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) both went 2-for-4 with a double for the Engineers. First-year Ajinkya Gundaria (Alpharetta, Ga.) fell to 0-2 on the year after giving up three runs on six hits over 2.1 innings.

The Green and White left the bases loaded in the first before jumping in front in the second on Kelly's two-out, two-run double to the gap in right center. Guest hit a towering home run down the left field line with one out in the third to make it 3-0 and Manning drilled a two-run shot to right with one out in the fifth to extend the margin to 5-1.

Kiely brought home Lapham with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and then answered Kyle Sonandres' RBI ground out in the top of the eighth inning with a two-run blast to right center with two outs in the bottom of the frame to give the hosts a six-run advantage.

Spalter retired the first eight batters he faced to start the game and did not allow a hit until the fourth on the way to winning his third straight decision.

Both teams return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. as Babson travels to Southern Maine, while MIT visits Amherst.
