Box Score 2 Kelly Matches Single-Game Hits Record as Beavers Finish Off Three-Game Sweep of Lions
LYNN, Mass.—Junior Jackson Kelly (Wenonah, N.J.) matched a school record with six hits in game two and was one of three players to record a pair of multi-hit games as Babson College rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Emerson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Fraser Field.
The Beavers won game one 13-0 in the seven innings and defeated the Lions in eight innings in the nightcap, 18-6. Thanks to a three-game series sweep, Babson has now won a season-best seven consecutive outings to improve to 18-8 overall and 8-1 in league play. Emerson dips to 9-15 overall and 2-7 in the NEWMAC.
Game 1: Babson 13, Emerson 0 (7 innings)
Sophomore Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two walks and three runs scored, senior Sean Burychka (Mount Laurel, N.J.) singled three times and drove in two runs, and classmate Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) was 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBI to lead the Beavers, who finished with 15 hits. Senior Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and three runs scored, while junior Patrick Manning (Weymouth, Mass.) and first-year Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) both homered in the win.
Junior Tim Noone (Needham, Mass.) won his fifth consecutive start tossing 6.0 shutout innings while striking out seven to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Babson scored a pair of runs in the second and got a leadoff homer from Manning in the fourth to spark a four-run rally. Yellen tripled to plate a pair of runs and scored on Burychka's single one batter later to extend the lead to 6-0.
The onslaught continued in the sixth as the Beavers sent 12 men to the plate to double their advantage. Yellen got things started with a two-run single, Sadowsky cranked a two-run homer and Lapham stroked out a two-out single to the opposite field to plate two more runs. Kelly, who had two hits in the opener, doubled to the gap in left center to bring home graduate student Alex Reynolds (Hopkinton, Mass.) with the final run of the game in the top of the seventh.
Game 2: Babson 18, Emerson 6
Kelly finished 6-for-6 with two doubles, six RBI and four runs scored, while Santos contributed a double, a triple, two walks and two runs scored as part of the Beavers' 17-hit attack. Yellen and Sadowsky added two hits apiece and senior Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI in the victory.
Kelly helped the Green and White jump out to a 4-0 lead with a two-run single in the top of the first only to see Emerson answer back with four runs of its own, including RBI doubles by junior Thai Morgan (Waldwick, N.J.) and senior Calvin Jacey (Mystic, Conn.) and a run-scoring single by first-year Briggs Loveland (Burleson, Texas). Senior Quinton Copeland (Houston, Texas) gave the Lions a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the second before Babson responded by scoring in each of the next six frames.
Lapham tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the third and Kelly put the Beavers in front 7-5 with a two-out, two-run single in the fourth. Babson took advantage of four errors to plate two more runs in the fifth and then got RBI singles from Pirkl and Yellen and an RBI triple by Santos in the sixth to stretch its lead to 12-5.
Kelly doubled to drive in Kiely and then scored on Manning's RBI single in the seventh, and then singled to center with runners on first and second with one out in the eighth and came all the way around to score thanks to a three-base error by the centerfielder making it 17-6. Yellen plated the Beavers' final run of the game when he was plunked with the bases loaded.
Sophomore Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) struck out four and allowed just one run on one hit over 4.0 innings to earn the win in relief pushing his record on the year to 4-2 for Babson.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. as the Beavers host Clark, while Emerson takes on Springfield.
