SERIES HISTORY
• Babson is 21-0 all-time against Emerson in a series that dates back to 2011.
• The Beavers swept last season's doubleheader and have scored nine or more runs in six consecutive outings against the Lions going back to 2018.
LAST MEETING
• Matthew Valente '20 M'21 went doubled, tripled and drove in four runs, while senior Thomas Lapham walked and scored twice and finished with three RBI to help Babson finish off a sweep of Emerson with an 11-6 win in game two of last year's twin bill on April 24, 2021, in Northborough, Mass.
• Michael Nocchi '20 M'21, William Gallagher '20 M'21, Jack Theriault '20 M'21 and Henry Leake '21 combined to throw 4.2 innings of shutout relief for the Beavers, who took the lead for good with a three-run seventh inning.
• Thai Morgan hit a three-run homer and Jake Hatch added a solo blast for the Lions.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• Babson (15-8, 5-1 NEWMAC) defeated New England College, 8-4, for its fourth consecutive win on Thursday afternoon.
• Sophomore Brant Savage homered, senior Josh Yellen went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Lapham knocked in the go-ahead runs with a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth for the Beavers, who rallied from an early 3-0 deficit.
• Lapham is batting .345 with three extra-base hits, 12 RBI and team highs of 16 walks and 26 runs scored, senior Sean Burychka is hitting .325 and leads the squad in extra-base hits (10) and runs batted in (19), and sophomore Francis Kiely has raised his average to .324 to go along with six doubles, one home run and 18 RBI.
• Junior Anthony St. John (3-0, 3.19 ERA) has worked into the ninth inning in each of last two starts, classmate Tim Noone (4-1, 3.99 ERA) has allowed just one earned run over his last 25.0 innings, and classmate Stephen McLendon is 1-1 with four saves, a 1.72 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 15.2 innings out of the bullpen this spring.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
• Emerson (9-12, 2-4 NEWMAC) snapped a four-game losing streak with an 11-10 win over WPI on Tuesday.
• Matt Nachamie doubled, homered and finished with five RBI and Joe Colucci went 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored for the Lions, who got a game-winning single from Briggs Loveland as part of a three-run ninth-inning rally.
• Morgan is batting .354 with four doubles, four homers, 20 RBI and 21 runs scored, senior Quinton Copeland is hitting .341 and leads the team in extra-base hits (13), runs batted in (22) and runs scored (25), and Hatch enters the weekend with a .300 average to go along with three doubles, five home runs and 18 RBI.
• Johnny Maffei (1-1, 4.29 ERA) has tossed a pair of complete games while striking out 35 batters in 35.2 innings, Al Ortega has not allowed an earned run in 6.2 innings over two starts and Chris Lowe (3-3) has made a team-high 10 appearances on the year.
PITCHING PROWESS
• The Beavers rank second in Division III in walks allowed per nine innings (2.02), third in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.91) and 15th in WHIP (1.26), in addition to boasting a 4.05 team ERA that is first in the NEWMAC.
• St. John and Noone have both won their first two conference starts while combining for 28 strikeouts and just four walks in 29.1 innings to go along with a 1.53 earned run average.
• Babson's staff will be tested by Emerson, which leads the NEWMAC in batting average (.317) and slugging percentage (.483) while averaging 7.33 runs per game.
HEATING UP AT THE DISH
• During the Beavers' current four-game winning streak, first-year Walter Sadowsky is batting .533 (8-for-15) with a double, a homer, two RBI and five runs scored, while Savage is hitting .385 (5-for-13) with a homer, two RBI and four runs scored.
STREAKING INTO THE WEEKEND
• Lapham, Sadowsky and senior Jack Pirkl all have a hit in four straight outings, while Kiely, graduate student Alex Reynolds and first-year Justin Guest have all recorded at least one hit in three straight contests.
• Lapham also has reached base safely in 16 consecutive games.
NUMBERS TO KNOW
• The Beavers are 11-1 this season when finishing with more hits than their opponents and 12-3 when recording 10 or more hits.
• Babson is 8-1 when scoring in the first inning.
• The Green and White has drawn at least one base on balls in 35 straight games.
