Kiely, Spalter Lead Baseball Past Coast Guard, 10-0

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Francis Kiely (Falmouth, Maine), who went 4-for-4 against Coast Guard last Tuesday, had three hits and knocked in four runs on Monday and sophomore Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) pitched six scoreless innings of four-hit baseball as Babson College blanked Coast Guard, 10-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game at Govoni Field.

The Beavers avenged the 4-1 loss to Coast Guard last week and posted their third straight victory, improving to 14-8 overall and 5-1 in the NEWMAC, while the Bears had their nine-game winning streak snapped and fell to 14-7 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

Kiely had two-run singles in both the first and fourth innings to lead the Beaver offense, while first-year Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) had two hits and scored a run. Senior Sean Burychka (Mount Laurel, N.J.) reached base three times on a hit and two walks and scored two runs, and first-year Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) and junior Jackson Kelly (Wenonah, N.J.) also drove in runs in the win.

Spalter did not walk a batter in his six-inning stint and struck out one, inducing three double play balls. Senior Nate Carpenter (Groveland, Mass.) got the last three outs in the seventh inning to close out the win.

Senior Cody Fidler (Temple, Pa.), junior Justin Stasiak (Effort, Pa.), and first-years Grayson Irwin (Wilmington, N.C.) and Jack Steel (Medford Lakes, N.J.) mustered hits for the Bears. Fidler and Irwin singled with one out in the second inning but Spalter got a double-play ball to end the threat, and the Beavers turned another twin-killing after Steel's leadoff single in the third.

Babson got all the runs its would need in the first inning after Burychka walked and senior Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch put them both in scoring position and Kiely's single to left drove them in.

The Beavers exploded for six runs in the fourth inning, all with two outs. After senior Jack Pirkl (Bridgewaters, N.Y.) singled and walks to classmate Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass.) and Burychka loaded the bases, one run came home on a Coast Guard error, Kiely followed with a two-run single to left and Guest delivered a run-scoring double to right. The final two runs of the inning came home on another Bears' error.

The Green and White tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning when Guest scored on a passed ball and Sadowsky scored on Kelly's sacrifice fly. The game ended after Coast Guard did not score in the top of the seventh.

Coast Guard used five pitchers in the game. First-year Sean Rojas (San Antonio, Texas) started and took the loss (1-1), giving up three hits and two runs in 2.2 innings, striking out two.

The Beavers will be back on the diamond on Thursday with a non-conference game at Southern Maine at 3:30 p.m. Coast Guard plays the first of a NEWMAC three-game series against Clark on Friday in Worcester, Mass. at 3 p.m.
