Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with a homer and junior Tim Noone (Needham, Mass.) allowed just one run over seven innings to help Babson College defeat visiting WPI, 7-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Govoni Field.
With the win, Babson improves to 13-8 overall and 4-1 in league play, while WPI slips to 11-10 overall and 1-4 in the NEWMAC.
Sophomore Francis Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) homered and senior Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) recorded a two-run double for the Beavers, who got hits from seven different players in the victory. Noone (4-1) struck out seven and allowed just one run on four hits to improve to win his fourth consecutive start.
Senior Andrew Dupuis (Raymond, N.H.) dropped to 1-2 on the year with loss for the Engineers after giving up four runs on five hits to go along with six strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
Babson jumped in front in the top of the first on Kiely's two-run blast to right center and scratched out two more runs in the fourth as Sadowsky walked scored on senior Sean Burychka's (Mount Laurel, N.J.) pop-up to shallow right, while fellow senior Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, N.Y.) stroked a one-out single and came around to score on a wild pitch for a 4-0 advantage.
WPI, which had just one hit through the first four innings, used a two-out double by sophomore DJ Brooks (Danvers, Mass.) and an RBI single from senior Andrew Brooks (Millis, Mass.) one batter later to cut its deficit to 4-1. The Beavers wasted listed time responding as Sadowsky led off the sixth with his first career home run to start a three-run rally.
Sophomore Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) and senior Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass.) both walked and worked their way into scoring position before coming home on Yellen's two-out, two-run double down the right field line that pushed the margin to 7-1. Noone worked around a one-out single by junior Kyle Johns (Milltown, N.J.) and a walk to junior Joe Salvon (Longmeadow, Mass.) in the bottom of the frame and then had a free pass to first-year Gavin George (Salem, N.H.) erased thanks to a 6-4-3 double play in the seventh.
Graduate student Truman Devitt (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) retired the side in order in the eighth and junior Stephen McLendon (Nashua, N.H.) struck out a pair in the ninth for the Beavers.
Babson returns to action on Monday when it hosts Coast Guard at 3:30 p.m., while WPI faces Emerson in Northborough, Mass., on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
