Baseball Edged by Roger Williams, 4-3

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I.—Senior Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) homered in the fourth inning and recorded the final six outs to earn his first save of the season as Roger Williams University defeated visiting Babson College, 4-3, in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Paolino Field.

Babson, which has dropped two straight games, slips to 9-6 overall while Roger Williams improves to 15-1 with its fifth consecutive win.

Senior Jack Pirkl (Brightwaters, N.Y.) and sophomore Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) both singled twice and scored a run, while junior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) went 2-for-4 to lead the Beavers. Senior Andrew Dembowski (Danvers, Mass.) and junior Jackson Kelly (Wenonah, N.J.) each drove in a run in the loss.

First-year Griffin Cofsky (Walpole, Mass.) shouldered the loss and is now 0-2 on the year after giving up three runs on six hits to go along with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Senior William Cournan (Pembroke, Mass.) and junior Stephen McLendon (Nashua, N.H.) each tossed a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts apiece, while first-year Luke McClintock (South Hamilton, Mass.) allowed one run in two innings out of the bullpen.

Junior Christopher Flynn (Randolph, N.J.) doubled and homered while classmate Matt Massaro (Fairfield, Conn.) and graduate student Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) both singled and drove in a run for the Hawks. Graduate student Connor Hewlette (Deer Park, N.Y.) improved to 3-0 allowing a pair of unearned runs on six hits to go along with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work.

Hewlette worked out of a bases-loaded jam with an inning-ending double play in the top of the first and Roger Williams got an RBI single from Jenkins to jump in front 1-0 in the bottom of the frame. Massaro doubled the lead with his two-out RBI knock in the second and Bonavita homered with one out in the fourth to make it 3-0.

Santos led off the fifth with a single and came home with Babson's first run on an error following Pirkl's base hit to left. Dembowski cut the deficit to 3-2 with an RBI ground out that brought home Pirkl, but Flynn led off the sixth with his third home run of the season to help the Hawks regain a two-run advantage.

The Beavers got back within a run in the eighth as senior Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass.) started the inning with a walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelly. Bonavita got an inning-ending ground out to third with the tying run on third and then worked around Pirkl's two-out single to close the door in the ninth.

Both teams return to action on Saturday with doubleheaders beginning at 12 p.m. as Babson hosts Springfield while Roger Williams travels to Suffolk.
