Baseball Downs Framingham State for Third Straight Win, 10-1

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), junior Michael Cook (Whitman, Mass.) and sophomore Francis Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) finished with two hits apiece to help Babson College defeat visiting Framingham State University, 10-1, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field.

With its third straight win, Babson improves to 7-4 on the year. Framingham State had its two-game winning streak snapped and is now 3-8 overall.

Kiely doubled and finished with three runs batted in, Yellen doubled and scored three runs, and Cook added an RBI as part of the Beavers' 10-hit attack. Senior Thomas Lapham (Charlestown, Mass.) doubled and drove in a run while classmates Sean Burychka (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and Andrew Dembowski (Danvers, Mass.) and first-year Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) each contributed an RBI in the victory.

Sophomore Tristen Spalter (Sergeantsville, N.J.) struck out six and allowed just one run over 5.2 innings to improve to 2-0 on the season for Babson.

The Green and White jumped on top with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the first as Kiely plated Yellen with a single through the left side before racing home from second on Cook's infield single for a 2-0 lead. Framingham State cut its deficit in half on an RBI triple by first-year Joseph Fasolino (Norton, Mass.) in the top of the second but the Beavers responded with runs in each of the next four innings to pull away.

Yellen scored on Sadowsky's foul pop-up in the third, Dembowski scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and then produced an RBI single before scoring again as part of a two-run fifth to make it 6-1. Babson scored four more times in the sixth as Lapham smoked a double to the base of the wall in right to bring home Pirkl, Burychka followed with an RBI knock and Kiely plated two more with a double down the left field line extending the margin to 10-1.

Spalter, who breezed through the first, gave up three hits in the second before punching out back-to-back hitters to get out of the inning allowing just one run. First-year Luke McClintock (South Hamilton, Mass.) recorded the final out of the sixth, junior Tim Person (Hudson, Mass.) struck out the side in the seventh and senior William Cournan (Pembroke, Mass.) and junior Stephen McLendon (Nashua, N.H.) both fanned a pair of hitters over the final two innings for the Beavers.

Sophomore Scott Nosky (Dedham, Mass.) dropped to 0-3 for Framingham State after giving up four runs, three of them earned, on four hits while striking out three in 4.0 innings.

Both teams return to action on Saturday at 12 p.m. as Babson travels to Salem State for a doubleheader, while the Rams travel to Wheaton.
