WHAT TO KNOW
• No. 5 Babson will travel to No. 3 SUNY Geneseo for a NCAA Tournament quarterfinal match-up this Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena.
• The winner of Saturday's game will travel to Lake Placid, N.Y. for the NCAA national semifinals on Friday, March 25 at Herb Brooks Arena. The national championship game is the next day, March 26, at Herb Brooks Arena.
SERIES HISTORY
• Babson is 0-0-2 all-time against Geneseo in a series that dates back to the 1989-90 season.
• The Beavers and Knights tied a pair of NCAA Tournament games against each other in a first-round series in 1990, 3-3 and 1-1.
• The Green and White took home the series with a 1-0 victory in a mini-game following Saturday's deadlock on a goal by Dan Pompeo '93.
• Joe Capprini '91 made 14 saves in the mini-game to secure the win after making 44 stops in the 3-3 tie and 26 saves in the 1-1 draw.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• No. 5 Babson (20-5-2) advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-0 shutout victory over No. 14 Trinity in an NCAA Tournament first-round game last Saturday at the Babson Skating Center.
• The Beavers posted their seventh straight victory, which included a 5-3 New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) title game victory over Skidmore College on March 5, also at the Babson Skating Center.
• Senior defenseman Ryan Campbell scored one goal and assisted on another and graduate student Brad Arvanitis made 27 saves in goal in the whitewash over Trinity.
• Seniors Ryan Black and John Corrigan also scored for the Beavers and classmate Mike Egan and sophomore Thomas Kramer registered assists. Arvanitis posted his first shutout of the season and the fifth of his career and was aided by 18 blocked shots by the Beaver defense.
• Black (19-19-38) leads the NEHC lead in goals and points and ranks 11th in Division III in goals per game and 17th in points per game. Egan (14-18-32) is tied for third in the NEHC points and ranks fifth in assists. Wiesner (11-12-23) posted his third 20-point season, and Kramer (11-12-23) and Boutoussov (12-9-21) also have 20-point campaigns. Boutoussov is second in the NEHC with seven power play goals.
• Arvanitis (14-3-2, 2.37 GAA, .922 sv. pct.) leads the NEHC in wins and ranks third in save percentage and fifth in goals against average.
• The Beavers had a seven-game streak with a power play goal snapped against Trinity but still rank sixth in Division III in power-play percentage (29.3) and 13th in scoring offense (4.04 goals per game).
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS
• No. 3 Geneseo (22-3-1) is in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals on the strength of a first-round bye after capturing its fourth consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship on March 5 at the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena.
• Senior Dan Bosio scored a pair of goals and junior goalie Matt Petizian made 24 saves as the Knights took down Oswego in the title game, 6-1. Bosio was named Tournament MVP while Petizian and senior defenseman Chris Perna joined him on the All-Tournament Team
• First-year Peter Morgan, junior Justin Cmunt, and seniors Henry Cleghorn and Brendan Miller also scored for the Knights, and Perna and junior defenseman Alex Wilkins each finished with two assists.
• Bosio (22-7-29) recorded his second-straight multi-goal game and his sixth of the season and ranks second nationally in goals per game. Morgan (17-24-41) is 11th nationally in points per game and ranks in the top 20 in both goals and assists per game. Miller (8-16-24), Cmunt (17-5-22), junior Tyson Gilmour (9-13-22) and Perna (4-18-22) give the Knights a potent attack. Bosio and Cmunt share the Division III lead with nine power play goals apiece.
• Petizian (17-3-0, 1.56 GAA, .936 sv. pct.) ranks sixth nationally in goals against average and ninth in save percentage.
• Geneseo ranks sixth in Division III in scoring offense (4.77), second in scoring defense (1.58), and seventh in power play percentage (28.2).
BABSON IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT (COMPLETE NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY)
• Babson is making its 18th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, which includes the 2020 tourney that was cancelled prior to the start of play.
• The Green and White are playing in their fourth quarterfinal game since 2007, falling to Manhattanville (5-3) in 2007, Norwich (4-0) in 2013, and Oswego State (3-0) in 2014. The Beavers are seeking their first national semifinal appearance since 1991, when they lost to Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 5-2.
• The Beavers have an 18-25-6 overall record in NCAA Tournament play, not counting seven mini-games between 1984 and 1992.
• Babson has made six semifinal appearances (1983, 1984, 1988-91) and won its only national championship in 1984.
GENESEO IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT (COMPLETE POST-SEASON HISTORY)
• Geneseo is making its ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, dating back to the first-round series against Babson in 1990 and including the 2020 tourney that was cancelled prior to the start of play.
• The Knights have a 6-7-2 record in NCAA Tournament play, with visits to the national semifinals in 2014, 2016, and 2019.
• Geneseo is 3-1 in the NCAA quarterfinal round, defeating Norwich (3-2) in 2014, Williams (2-1) in 2016, and Manhattanville (8-2) in 2019 and falling to Colby (2-1) in 2018.
HISTORY LESSON
• In addition to picking up its first victory since 2013 last Saturday, Babson recorded its first shutout in NCAA Tournament play since the 1984 national championship game when the Beavers blanked Union 8-0 to raise the Walnut and Bronze.
• With his 27 saves, Arvanitis joined fellow All-America selection and Babson Hall of Famer Keith Houghton '85 as the only goaltenders in program history to record a shutout in the NCAA Tournament.
UNLIKELY HEROS
• Campbell, who scored the game-winner in last week's first-round victory over Trinity and assisted on the empty-net goal, had not scored a goal since February 14, 2020, against Skidmore, a string of 35 games, and now has only three goals in his 86-game career.
• Junior Rory Casey, who tallied a pair of goals for Babson in the NEHC championship game, entered the contest with just one goal in his 33-game career, which came earlier this season at Skidmore. He was in the line-up as the extra skater.
• Junior Andrew Holland scored his first goal of the season at 12:47 of overtime for the game-winner in Babson's NEHC quarterfinal victory over Norwich. He has just three goals in his last 31 games dating back to the start of last season.
CLUTCH SCORERS
• Black scored the game-winning goals in both the NEHC semifinal and championships games for the Beavers, pushing his season total to nine game-winners and his career-total to 12.
• Black leads all players in all NCAA Divisions with the nine game-winners and has tied the all-time NCAA Division III single-season record (Colin Mulvey, Norwich, 2013; Steve Aronson, St. Thomas (MN), 2000; Paul Caufield, Wis.- Stevens Point, 1991).
• Egan has 13 game-winners in his career, including a pair both this year and last year and six in 2019-20 when he was tabbed as the NCAA Division III statistical champion for game-winning goals.
SENIOR SNAPSHOT
• The Beavers have 13 seniors and two graduate students on this year's roster, including 13 skaters and two goalies.
• Of the 13 non-goalies who are seniors or grad students, 10 have played in at least 23 games and accounted for 73 goals and 109 assists, and 12 have skated in at least 19 contests, totaling 77 goals and 116 assists. The two goalies have recorded for 17 of the 20 victories.
• The Babson senior class has posted a 63-18-7 record over the past four years for a .756 winning percentage.
POSTSEASON HONORS
• Postseason honors have continued to pile up for Black, who was named NEHC Player of the Year and first team all-conference and was tabbed the NEHC Tournament Most Valuable Player.
• Black was joined on the All-NEHC team by Egan and Corrigan, who were second team selections and were also NEHC All-Tournament Team honorees. Kramer earned NEHC All-Rookie team accolades.
• The trio of Black, Egan and Corrigan were all among 30 players selected as semifinalists for the 21st Joe Concannon Award as announced by the Greater Gridiron Club of Boston, given to the top American-born player in New England in Division II/III.
EXPERIENCE BEHIND THE BENCH
• Head coach Jamie Rice '90 has the Beavers in the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time during his 18-year tenure at Babson.
• As a coach, Rice has led the Green and White to the national quarterfinals four times (2007, 2013, 2014, 2022).
• During his playing days at Babson, Rice helped the program make four NCAA Tournament appearances, which included reaching the national semifinals three straight seasons from 1988-90, including the series against Geneseo in 1990.
THE WAIT IS OVER
• Saturday's first round contest against Trinity was played exactly two years to after the Beavers' 2020 NCAA Tournament game against Wesleyan was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
• Babson was set to host the Cardinals on March 14 before the NCAA announced the cancelation of its winter and spring championships 48 hours before the game.
• Nineteen members of the Babson program were on the 2019-20 squad that earned an at-large bid to the tournament before it was called off.
• Geneseo was also set to host an NCAA quarterfinal game in 2020 (against either Hobart or Adrian) when the tournament was cancelled.
TASTE OF THE TOURNAMENT
• Arvanitis and Boutoussov are only two members of this year's Babson squad with prior NCAA Tournament experience.
• Arvanitis was a backup goaltender at UMass when the Minutemen reached the Division I national championship game in 2019, while Boutoussov helped Salve Regina advance to the Division III national title game in 2018. He produced a pair of assists in a quarterfinal win over Nichols and scored the tying goal in the third period of the final before the Seahawks fell in overtime to St. Norbert, 3-2.
BEAVER BITES
• Corrigan's 17 assists are tied for the second highest total by a Babson defenseman over the last decade. His 41 career assists rank fifth among Beavers' defensemen going back to 2006-07.
• Black ranks tied for 16th in program history in points (111), tied for 15th in goals (48) and is tied for 13th in assists (63).
• Black (37) and Egan (31) give the Green and White are the first Babson duo to produce 30 or more points in a season since 2004-05 when Johnny Kim '06, Sam Vatrano '06, Jamas Lafreniere '06 and Tom Sullivan '06 all finished with at least 30.
• Arvanitis went 3-0 with a 1.71 goals against average and a .939 save percentage in the NEHC Tournament and is 4-0 with a 1.32 goals against average and a .952 save percentage in four starts this postseason.

• Six of the 10 schools in the NEHC are ranked (3) or receiving votes (3) in the most recent USCHO.com Division III poll – No. 5 Babson, No. 7 Hobart, and No. 10 Elmira are in the top 15, and Norwich, UMass Boston and Skidmore are among others receiving votes.
