Box Score PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.— Senior Danny Alvarez (Bronx, N.Y.) had three hits, including a home run, and drove in four as No. 15 Denison University defeated Babson College, 7-1, in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon in the Snowbird Classic.
With the loss, Babson drops to 4-3 on the year, while Denison won it's third in a row and improved to 7-1 on the season.
First-year Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) had two hits and a walk to lead the Beavers, while seniors Andrew Dembowski (Danvers, Mass.) and Josh Yellen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) had one hit each with Yellen knocking in Dembowski with the only Beaver run.
Senior Payton Burch (Wilmette, Ill.) also had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and scored two runs for Denison. First-year Eric Colaco (Richfield, Ohio) and sophomore Owen Wilson (Charlotte, N.C.) had two hits each, and junior Ari Fierer (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Noah Leib (Evanston, Ill.) had extra-base hits as well.
The Big Red jumped on top in the first inning when Colaco led off with a double down the left field line, and Alvarez and sophomore Jake Welsch (Glenmoore, Pa.) later produced two-out RBI singles. Denison pushed the lead to 5-0 in the third inning when first-year Matt McClements (Columbus, Ohio) singled up the middle, Fierer doubled to left and Alvarez blasted a three-run shot for his first home run of the season.
Denison tacked on single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Burch hit a leadoff double to left in the fourth and scored on Wilson's single, and Burch scored on a double-steal in the sixth.
Babson scored its only run in the eighth inning when Dembowski cracked a double to left and came around to score on a pair of infield grounders.
Senior Kenny Lippman (McLean, Va.) earned the win (1-0) for the Big Red, giving up just two hits and four walks in five scoreless innings, striking out three. Junior Jacob Pendergraft (Raleigh, N.C.) went three innings of relief, allowing an unearned run on one hit and a walk, fanning one, and senior Henry Haack (Evanston, Ill.) worked a scoreless ninth.
First-year Griffin Cofsky (Walpole, Mass.) started for Babson and took the loss (0-1), surrendering six runs in three innings, striking out one. Sophomore Liam McLaughlin (Darien, Conn.) worked 3.1 innings of relief and gave up just one run, striking out four.
The Beavers return to the diamond Wednesday at noon when they take on Wooster, a team they edged 5-4 in 11 innings on Monday.
GAME NOTES
• Babson is 0-2 all-time against Denison, dropping the only game versus the Big Red since a 9-7 setback in 1998.
• The Beavers' one run was the fewest in a game since a 7-1 loss to Wheaton on April 18, 2021, a streak of 17 games.
• Sadowsky has gone 4-for-7 with a pair of walks the past two days in his first two collegiate games, with two multi-hit outings, two runs scored and three RBI.
