No. 5 Men's Ice Hockey Blanks No. 14 Trinity in NCAA Tournament First Round, 3-0

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Senior defenseman Ryan Campbell (Scituate, Mass.) scored one goal and assisted on another and graduate student Brad Arvanitis (Holliston, Mass.) made 27 saves in goal to help No. 5 Babson College blank No. 14 Trinity College, 3-0, Saturday evening in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Tournament inside the Babson Skating Center.

With the win, the Beavers posted their seventh straight victory and their first NCAA Tournament triumph since 2013. Babson (20-5-2) advances to a national quarterfinal next Saturday at No. 3 Geneseo (N.Y.). The Bantams, making their eighth NCAA Tournament appearance, had an eight-game winning streak snapped and complete their season at 17-8-1 overall.

Seniors Ryan Black (Pomfret, Conn.) and John Corrigan (Stoneham, Mass.) also scored for the Beavers and classmate Mike Egan (Billerica, Mass.) and sophomore Thomas Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.) registered assists. Arvanitis posted his first shutout of the season and the fifth of his career, and was aided by 18 blocked shots by the Beaver defense.

Sophomore J.P. Mella (Stamford, Conn.), who allowed just one goal in three conference tournament games last week, made 21 saves on 23 shots but took the loss.

"Tonight's win was a tremendous effort by the players," said Babson head coach Jamie Rice. "This is their team, they played their hearts out, and played with passion and resiliency. We seem to have a different hero every night, and tonight it was Ryan Campbell. But this was a team effort, with all the guys in all the time. Collectively, that's been our strength all year. When you look at what they've been through the past two years, it's tremendous for them. We're looking forward to having practice on Monday."

Shots on goal were tied 7-7 in an evenly-matched scoreless first period that saw no penalties called. Campbell broke the scoreless game at 1:55 of the second period, collecting a rebound in front of Arvantitis, skating the length of the ice and sliding a shot through the pads of Mella for his first goal of the season. Neither team was able to score the rest of the period, with Trinity finishing with a 12-7 shot advantage, including four shots on the only power play attempt of the period.

Black tacked on an insurance goal for Babson at 6:38 of the third period on assists from Egan and Kramer, Black's 19th goal of the season. The Bantams had one more power play attempt in the third period but could not convert, and Corrigan sealed the win with an empty net goal from his defensive zone with a minute to play.

Trinity finished with a 27-24 advantage in shots and did not commit a penalty but came up empty on its two power play opportunities.
