Spring Break Preview: Baseball Travels to Port Charlotte, Fla., for Six Games Starting Saturday

WHAT TO KNOW
• Babson travels to Port Charlotte, Fla., for six games beginning on March 12.
• In addition to single games against Lebanon Valley and Baldwin Wallace, which is receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com poll, the Beavers will play two games apiece against No. 22 Denison and Wooster.
• All of Babson's games will be played at Centennial Park on 1185 Centennial Blvd., in Port Charlotte.

SERIES HISTORY
vs. Lebanon Valley: first meeting
vs. Baldwin Wallace: the Beavers are 1-0 all-time after defeating the Yellow Jackets 6-5 on Nicholas Browne's '19 two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth on March 4, 2018.
vs. Wooster: first meeting
vs. Denison: the Beavers are 0-1 all-time against the Big Red after suffering a 9-7 loss back in 1998.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• Babson (2-2) won took two of three from No. 17 Trinity on the final weekend of February before suffering a 6-5 12-inning loss to Brandeis on March 5.
• Senior Sean Burychka, who drove in two runs, and classmate Jack Pirkl both finished with three hits for the Beavers, who stranded a season-high 15 runners on base.
• Burychka is batting .357 (5-for-14) with a double and three RBI, senior Thomas Lapham is hitting .353 (6-of-17) with three runs batted in and five runs scored, and classmate Josh Yellen enters the week with a .294 average to go along with five RBI and two runs scored to lead and offense that is averaging 6.3 runs.
• Sophomore Tristen Spalter is 1-0 with a 5.23 ERA in two starts, junior Anthony St. John gave up just two runs over 7.0 innings in the first start of his career at Trinity on February 27, and classmate Stephen McLendon is 0-1 with two saves in three relief appearances this spring.

SCOUTING THE DUTCHMEN
• Lebanon Valley (4-4) has won four of five games in Florida and extended its winning streak to three with a 15-5 victory over Wittenberg on Thursday.
• Nico Santoro is batting .467 with two doubles and four RBI, Mike Bulgia is hitting .370 with a pair of doubles and five runs batted in, and Dave Mangold boasts a .481 on-base percentage to go along with a double, a home run and a team-high six RBI.
• Tanner Rock is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in two starts, Michael Williams (1-0, 4.05 ERA) has made a team-high four appearances, and Brady Frankland (1-0, 1.42) has held opposing hitters to a .095 average in 6.1 innings.
• The Dutchmen are batting .272 as a team and averaging 5.4 runs per game, while the pitching staff owns a 5.18 ERA through eight games.

SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS
• Baldwin Wallace (8-0) has won all four of its games in Florida while averaging 10.3 runs and is coming off an 11-2 victory over Mitchell on Wednesday.
• Alex Ludwick is batting .444 with five extra-base hits, six stolen bases, four RBI and 11 runs scored, Drew Wilson is hitting .419 with three doubles, two homers and 13 runs batted in, and Luke Vonderhaar checks in at .355 with seven extra-base hits, eight RBI And 10 runs scored.
• Wilson is 3-0 with 12 strikeouts in 6.0 innings out of the bullpen this spring, while Steve Spidell (1-0, 1.86 ERA) and Dawson Gabe (1-0, 2.16) have combined for 26 strikeouts in 18.0 innings.
• The Yellow Jackets are batting .351 as a team and boast a team ERA of 3.86 while recording 13.89 strikeouts per nine innings.

SCOUTING THE SCOTS
• Wooster (1-1) split a season-opening doubleheader at Spalding on March and opens its 10-game Florida slate on Saturday against Sewanee.
• Tyler Chumita went 5-for-8 with a double and two RBI, Ben Gbur tripled and homered while finishing with four hits and four runs batted in, and Colin Springer gave up just two earned runs over 6.0 innings to earn a win for the Scots last Saturday against Spalding.
• Chumita (.465, 17 2B, 41 RBI) and Gbur (.324, 21 XBH, 18 SB, 45 RBI) both drove in more than 40 runs, Ben Hines batted .401 with 13 extra-base hits and 37 RBI, and Springer went 2-3 with three saves and a 2.41 ERA in 17 relief appearances last spring as Wooster advanced to the NCAC Championship series in 2021.
• The Scots were picked to finish second behind Denison in the NCAC preseason poll.

SCOUTING THE BIG RED
• No. 22 Denison (3-0), which begins its six-game Florida swing on Saturday, beat then-fourth-ranked Adrian 19-9 back on March 6.
• Eric Colaco is batting .462 (6-for-13) with three doubles, a home run and four runs batted in, Danny Alvarez is also hitting .462 with three RBI and five runs scored, and Dylan Hunter enters the week with a .400 average to go along with a double, a homer, six RBI and eight runs scored to lead a Big Red offense that is hitting .358 as a team.
• Charlie Fleming (1-0, 3.60 ERA) and Taylor Perrett (1-0, 7 SO, 5 IP) both won their first starts of the year, while seven Denison relievers have combined for 17 strikeouts and 3.40 ERA in 13.2 innings of work.
• The Big Red, which made its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance last spring, returns four players that started at least 20 games along with six of its top pitchers.

STREAKING BEAVERS
• Lapham enters Saturday's opening game against Lebanon Valley riding an 11-game hitting streak going back to last May, while Pirkl has reached base safely in 14 straight contests going back to April 2021.
• Yellen has a hit in each of his last six games, sophomore Francis Kiely boasts a five-game hitting streak and the trio of Burychka and juniors Michael Cook and Patrick Manning each own a three-game streak.

NATIONAL HONORS FOR MCLENDON
• After recording the final three outs in each of Babson's victories at Trinity, McLendon was named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week on March 2.

GOING DEEP
• After going 0-for-4 in his first career start at Trinity on February 25, first-year Justin Guest homered for his first collegiate hit in the second inning of last Saturday's loss to Brandeis.

NUMBERS TO KNOW
• Each of Babson's first four games has been decided by one or two runs for the first time since 2014 when it opened with five straight contests decided by two runs or less.
• Babson is 10-2 since the start of the 2021 campaign when scoring at least five runs.
• The Beavers are averaging 5.3 walks per game and have drawn at least one base on balls in 16 consecutive games going back to April 2021.
• The Green and White is 15-1 when leading after seven innings going back to the start of the 2021 season.
