Box Score HARTFORD, Conn.—Junior Ned Blanchard (West Hartford, Conn.) scored two minutes and 26 seconds into overtime as Trinity College overcame a 3-1 deficit to post a 4-3 victory over No. 9 Babson College Tuesday evening in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Williams Rink inside the Koeppel Community Sports Center.
With the loss, Babson dropped its second straight game and dipped to 7-4-2 overall while Trinity stopped a two-game skid and improved to 4-3-0 on the season. The Bantams avenged a 3-0 loss to Babson in last year's NCAA Tournament first-round match-up.
Senior Chris Rooney (Milton, Mass.) had a hand in all three Beaver goals with a goal and two assists, while sophomore Matt Cormier (Waltham, Mass.) and first-year Cam Joslin (Cohasset, Mass.) also scored for the Green and White. First-year Charlie Andriole (Branford, Conn.) picked up an assist and classmate Nate Mueller (Rogers, Minn.) finished with 24 saves in goal in the setback.
Junior Kyle Tomaso (Newport, R.I.) scored twice for the Bantams and sophomore Richard Boysen (Belle Vernon, Pa.) notched one goal. Senior Christian Hayes (Milton, Mass.) tallied a pair of assists, senior Riley Prattson (Tolland, Conn.) and sophomores Eamon Doheny (Lunenburg, Mass.) and Jax Murray (Minneapolis, Minn.) collected one assist each, and first-year Devin Bobak (Northwood, Ohio) made 23 saves to earn the win in goal.
Trinity needed just a minute and 29 seconds into the first period to get on the scoreboard as Tomaso fired a wrist shot from the right circle to give the Bantams the lead. Babson evened the game with 3:38 remaining in the period when Joslin tucked a shot in near the right post after a spinning backhanded pass from Cormier on the left side.
The Beavers netted the only goal of the second period at the 2:41 mark when Cormier split the defense for a partial breakaway and snapped a shot from between the circles that beat Bobak stick side into the upper right of the goal.
Babson extended the lead to 3-1 at 6:40 of the third when Rooney capitalized on a Bantam turnover at its own blue line and skated away with a breakaway from center ice before ripping a shot past Bobak for his second of the season.
The Bantams started their comeback at 10:48 of the third when Doheny's shot from the point was tipped in front by Boysen past Mueller to cut the deficit to 3-2. Trinity pulled Bobak in the final minute for an extra skater and it paid off when Tomaso fired in the tying goal from the left circle with 48 seconds remaining in regulation.
Bobak robbed senior Andrew Holland (Winchester, Mass.) on a redirection shot and potential game-winner from point blank range just over two minutes into the extra session. Moments later, Blanchard sniped the game-winner for Trinity from the right circle past Mueller into the far corner of the net.
Trinity finished with a 28-26 margin in shots on goal. Babson went scoreless on its power play following the only penalty of the game in the second period.
After a break for final exams and the Christmas holiday, Babson returns to action on Friday, December 30 with a 3 p.m. non-conference home game vs. Saint Michael's College. Trinity will play again this Saturday at No. 1 Hobart at 4 p.m.
