Box Score PINE VALLEY, N.Y.—Senior Andrew Holland (Winchester, Mass.) and graduate student Max Torrez (Framingham, Mass.) scored goals 62 second apart in the second period and No. 7 Babson College went on to a 3-1 road victory over No. 11 Elmira College Saturday afternoon in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey battle inside the Murray Athletic Center.
With the outcome, Babson improves to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in the NEHC while Elmira drops to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Sophomore Wyatt George (Mount Lebanon, Pa.) also scored a third-period power play goal for the Beavers, while first-year defenseman Will Holland (Charlotte, N.C.) collected three assists and classmates Ryan Murphy (Grosse Point Farms, Mich.) assisted on a pair. Senior Nolan Hildebrand (Penticton, British Columbia) made 36 saves in goal to post his second win of the season.
Elmira got its goal on a second-period power play from junior Bailey Krawczyk (Elmira, N.Y.) with an assist from senior Graham Denomme (Rockland, Ont.) and junior Daniel Dimon (Elmira, N.Y.). Senior Jeffrey Zero (Clifton Township, Pa.) made 26 saves in goal for the Soaring Eagles in the setback.
The hosts had a 14-8 lead in the shots in a scoreless first period, which included two power play attempts for Elmira and one for the Beavers. The tables turned in the second frame as Babson came alive and outshot the Soaring Eagles, 15-6, although Elmira again had two power play opportunities and the Green and White one.
After the Beavers were whistled for a penalty at 7:40 of the second, the Soaring Eagles capitalized. Krawczyk pounded in a loose puck after a scrum in front of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Babson evened the score at the 12-minute mark of the second after preventing the Soaring Eagles from getting the puck out of their own zone. Andrew Holland picked up a loose puck along the left boards and sent a wrister towards the net and the puck got past Zero to tie the game at 1-1.
The Beavers pulled ahead a minute later when Torrez converted a 2-on-2 rush with Will Holland. Torrez's initial shot from the top of the left circle went wide left but Holland sent the rebound off the back boards back to Torrez in front and he buried his first goal of the season.
The Green and White added an insurance goal at 8:47 of the third period when George was the recipient of a juicy rebound on a shot by Holland that was kicked away by Zero, and George hit the open net for his first goal of the season. Babson killed off an Elmira power play in the final eight minutes of the period and held on for the win despite being outshot 17-6 in the third period.
Elmira finished with a 37-29 advantage in shots on goal. Babson was 1-of-4 with the man-advantage and killed off five of six chances by the Soaring Eagles.
The Beavers return home to host UMass Boston next Friday in an NEHC game at the Babson Skating Center at 7 p.m. Elmira plays a non-conference game on Saturday at Lebanon Valley College at 5 p.m.
