No. 13/15 Men's Soccer Uses 90th-Minute Goal to Oust Wheaton in NEWMAC Semifinals, 1-0

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Louis Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) scored with 46 seconds to go in regulation to lift No. 13/15 Babson College to a 1-0 win over visiting Wheaton College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal on Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With its sixth consecutive victory, Babson improves to 14-3-2 overall and advances to the conference tournament final for the fourth straight season. Wheaton, which is fourth in the most recent NCAA Region II rankings, sees its year come to a close at 9-5-6.

Senior Mitchell Collins (Burlington, Conn.) recorded his eighth assist of the season for the Beavers, while sophomore goalkeeper Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made six saves in the win. His counterpart, Lyons' senior Cam Millington (Fairfield, Conn.), also made six saves in the loss.

Less than two minutes after re-entering the match, Gazo took a pass across the top of the box from Collins and drilled a right-footed rocket into the upper left corner for his seventh marker of the season. The goal was the final act in a contentious match that featured 28 fouls and seven cautions.

Both sides attempted seven shots in a first half that featured a pair of quality scoring chances for Wheaton. Junior Tyler Strange (Portland, Ore.) forced White to dive to his left to deny his shot from the top of the box in the 17th minute and White came charging off his line to make a sprawling save on senior Charlie Stringer (Medford, Ore.) in the 20th minute. Classmate Jack Brusso (Pawtucket, R.I.) had an opportunity to put away the rebound but Babson senior RJ Parrilla (Pawcatuck, Conn.) came sliding across the top of the six-yard box to block the attempt.

Millington made four of his six saves over the final 45 minutes and Collins missed just wide of the right post with a 35-yard free kick in the 54th minute for the Green and White.

The Beavers finished the game with a 16-11 edge in shots and a 9-2 bulger in corner kicks.

Babson will now host either second-seeded Emerson or third-seeded MIT in Saturday's NEWMAC final. The game time will be announced later on Thursday night.
