No. 7 Men's Ice Hockey nipped by Williams in OT, 2-1

Box Score

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.—Junior Connor Tobin (Sandwich, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal 3:29 into overtime as Williams College pulled out a 2-1 victory over No. 7 Babson College Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's ice hockey action inside the Lansing Chapman Rink.

With the verdict, Babson had its six-game unbeaten streak snapped and drops to 6-2-1 overall while Williams recorded its first win of the season to improve to 1-2-0.

First-year Brendan Kennedy (Georgetown, Ontario) scored his first career goal for Babson to tie the game midway through the third period and send the game into overtime. Classmates Nolan Dion (Marshfield, Mass.) and Nolan Woudenberg (Collegeville, Pa.) picked up assists and fellow first-year Nate Mueller (Rogers, Minn.) made 34 saves in the tough-luck loss.

Junior Henry Muller (Pacific Grove, Calif.) scored the first goal for Williams late in the first period with an assist from junior Ethan Prout (Boulder, Colo.). Senior Evan Ruschil (Katonah, N.Y.) made a career-high 48 saves in the victory.

Babson had a chance to score first with a power play midway through the opening period, but senior James Perullo (Revere, Mass.) hit the post with a shot and Ruschil stopped attempts by junior Thomas Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.) and first-year Will Holland (Charlotte, N.C.).

The Ephs drew first blood late in the period after Prout's shot from the left point was blocked in front of the goal and Muller pounced on the loose puck and snapped a shot over Muller just under the cross bar with 1:28 remaining in the opening frame.

Each team took 13 shots in a scoreless second period and both had a power play opportunity but neither could convert. Babson pulled even at the 9:31 mark of the third after Woudenberg's shot from the right point was blocked in front, and Kennedy collected the rebound and moved into open space below the face-off dot before spinning and firing a shot that went through Ruschil's pads and trickled over the goal line just inside the left post.

The Beavers had a 20-8 shot advantage in the third period but could not get the puck past Ruschil. Two of his saves came on a Babson power play, the only man-up opportunity for either team in the third stanza.

With the teams skating 3-on-3 in the overtime, Tobin stole the puck behind his own net and skated coast-to-coast with a Babson defender on his heels the entire way, and flipped a backhander from below the right face-off circle over the shoulder of Mueller for the game-winner.

The Beavers finished with a 49-36 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams came up empty with the man advantage, Babson going 0-for-3 and Williams 0-for-1.

Babson will remain in western Massachusetts for a game on Sunday at Amherst College at 3 p.m. while travels to No. 8 SUNY Geneseo also on Sunday at 3 p.m.
