Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine—No. 13/11 Babson College played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw before falling to Vassar College on penalty kicks in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Pickard Field.
Babson, which went unbeaten over its final eight matches, ends the year at 15-3-3, while Vassar (9-3-6) extends its unbeaten run to 12 games and advances to face eighth-ranked Bowdoin in Sunday's second round.
Graduate student Ben Williams (Scarborough, Ontario) had a goal and senior Mitchell Collins (Burlington, Mass.) recorded his team-leading ninth assist of the year for the Beavers. Sophomore goalkeeper Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made four saves on the day.
Senior Owen Fauth (Keene, N.H.) scored in the second half for the Brewers, who got eight saves from senior goalkeeper Eric Wnorowski (Mantoloking, N.J.).
Collins had the best scoring chance for either side over the first 45 minutes when his curling free kick sailed just over the crossbar at the 21:17 mark. Wnorowski pushed another bid by Collins over the crossbar just 2:08 into the second half and denied senior Eamon Keenan (East Greenwich, R.I.) from inside 10 yards following a scramble on the ensuing corner kick.
The Beavers finally broke through in the 54th minute as Williams took a feed from Collins and drilled a shot inside the right post for his 13th marker of the year. The Brewers equalized in the 68th minute though, as Fauth converted a penalty kick following a handball in the box.
The best chance for either side in extra time came in the 109th minute when Wnorowski stepped off his line to snare Babson junior Ryan Kim's (San Ramon, Calif.) shot from the top of the box.
The teams were forced to move to an adjacent field for penalty kicks, which were dominated by Vassar. Junior Louis Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) buried the opening attempt but the Beavers' missed the frame on each of their next three shots while sophomore Duncan Keker (Oakland, Calif.), senior Kyle Lopes (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) and sophomore Julian Funaro (Pottstown, Pa.) all converted for the Brewers.
The Green and White outshot Vassar 19-9 and finished with a 10-6 edge in corner kicks.
