Box Score MEDFORD, Mass.—Senior Martina Jankovic Chin (Zapresic, Croatia) led all players with 11 kills and classmate Lauren MacDonald (Westwood, Mass.) added eight kills and a match-high five blocks to help Babson College sweep Swarthmore College, 25-11, 25-20, 25-21, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday evening inside Cousens Gymnasium.
With the win, Babson improves to 22-8 overall and advances to the second round of the Medford Regional. Swarthmore sees its year come to a close at 17-9.
Juniors Lauren Gips (Orlando, Fla.) and Lulu McShane (Glencoe, Ill.) both registered eight kills, graduate student Izzy Seebold (Concord, N.C.) dished out 30 assists and junior Olivia Leinenweber (Neptune Beach, Fla.) had a match-high 13 digs to lead the Beavers, who hit .253 for the match.
Junior Kaylee Zhang (San Jose, Calif.) finished with nine kills and six digs, while senior Chloe Mayhue (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) added six kills and six digs to pace the Garnet. Junior Dani Pena (Southlake, Texas) handed out 14 assists and first-year Ellie Streeper (Needham, Mass.) registered a team-high 10 digs in the loss.
The Green and White led 9-6 in the opening set before pulling away thanks to an 8-0 run that included an ace by Gips, back-to-back kills by Jankovic Chin and MacDonald and a block by MacDonald and Seebold to make it 17-6. Swarthmore took advantage of consecutive errors before the Beavers used two straight kills by McShane and an ace by first-year Roz Cabuena (Kailua, Hawaii) to end the stanza.
Game two featured eight ties and three lead changes before Babson used a closing 7-0 run for a two-set lead. Down 20-18 following a kill by sophomore Trisha Razdan (Palo Alto, Calif.), first-year Isabella Allen (Williamsville, N.Y.) put away back-to-back kills and Gips followed with another to go in front 21-20 forcing a Garnet timeout. Leinenweber made it 22-20 with an ace and Gips added her fourth kill of the set following two straight errors by Swarthmore to finish off the rally.
The Beavers led by as many as four at 10-6 early in the third after a kill by Jankovic Chin before Swarthmore answered with a 14-5 that included a pair of kills by Zhang and two aces by first-year Angelina Heminway (Burlingame, Calif.) to take its largest lead of the game at 20-15. Babson rallied for the second set in a row though, getting two kills apiece from Jankovic Chin and MacDonald along with an ace from Gips to pull even at 20.
A block by MacDonald made it 22-20 and both she and Jankovic Chin registered late kills to put the match away.
Babson will face No. 19 Tufts in a second round match on Friday at 7 p.m.
