Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—No. 15 Babson College scored three goals in a 16-minute span in the first half to blow the game open and the Beavers went on to post their highest output in more than two decades with a 7-0 victory over Suffolk University Tuesday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With the win, Babson posted its third consecutive shutout and improves to 7-2-2 overall while Suffolk suffered its second straight setback to fall to 6-4-2.
Graduate student Ben Williams (Scarborough, Ontario) and senior Rodrigo Madiedo (Coral Gables, Fla.) led the Babson onslaught with a goal and an assist apiece in the win. Junior Liam Rhatigan (Holderness, N.H.), senior Ross Shellow (Miami, Fla.), sophomores Matthew Thompson (Medfield, Mass.) and Matias Gutierrez (Coral Gables, Fla.) added one goal apiece for the Beavers and first-year Troy Stacey (Belmont, Mich.) collected two assists.
Sophomore keeper Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) earned the win after not facing a shot on goal in the first half as Babson had a 13-1 advantage in total shots in the opening 45 minutes. Junior Mack Lemkau (Bedford, N.Y.) made two saves in 25 minutes of work to start the second half and first-year Derek Polanco (Verona, N.J.) made one stop in the final 20 minutes of the victory.
Sophomore Xander Balog (Tallahassee, Fla.) made seven saves in goal for the Rams in the loss.
The Beavers broke on top in the 14th minute when a clearing attempt by Balog from the 6-yard box deflected off Rhatigan and bounced back over the keeper's head into the net. The second goal also came with the help of the Rams defense in the 30th minute as a service into the box from senior Mitchell Collins (Burlington, Mass.) was deflected off the head of a Rams defender into the upper left corner for a Babson own goal.
Williams made it 3-0 in favor of the hosts in the 38th minute, connecting on a diving header at the near post on a cross from junior Ryan Kim (San Ramon, Calif.). The Beavers closed out the half with a goal in the final seconds on another header as Shellow finished off a cross from sophomore Louis Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) to make it 4-0 at the break.
The Green and White tacked on three goals in the final 14 minutes of the contest, with three reserves tallying their first goal of the season. Madiedo hit a low volley at the left post past the keeper on a diagonal feed from Stacey in the 76th minute; Thompson beat the keeper to the left side from the penalty spot for his first career goal in the 80th minute; and Gutierrez rounded out the scoring in the 88th minute, knocking in a rebound in the goal mouth for his first career marker.
The Beavers finished with a 26-8 advantage in shots and took all six of the match's corner kicks.
Babson returns to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday at Hartwell-Rogers Field, hosting Coast Guard for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. Suffolk returns home to host the University of New England Saturday at noon on Senior Day at James A. Sartori Stadium at East Boston Memorial Park.
