Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Isabella Allen (Williamsville, N.Y.) led three players in double figures with a match-high 16 kills and graduate student Izzy Seebold (Concord, N.C.) finished with 46 assists, 13 digs and thee service aces to help No. 18 Babson College rally for a four-set (22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-19) victory over visiting Emerson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's volleyball action on Tuesday night inside Staake Gymnasium.
Babson, which has won 15 consecutive matches, improves to 16-1 overall and 7-0 in league play. Emerson, which had its five-match winning streak snapped, slips to 10-2 overall and 3-2 in the NEWMAC.
Junior Lauren Gips (Orlando, Fla.) recorded 12 kills and three blocks, senior Laura Zuloaga (Naples, Fla.) contributed 11 kills and junior Lulu McShane (Glencoe, Ill.) hit .304 and chipped in with nine kills to lead the Beavers. Sophomore Tatum Stelter (Glendale, Ariz.) led four players in double figures with a career-high 20 digs, while first-year Roz Cabuena (Kailua, Hawaii) and junior Olivia Leinenweber (Neptune Beach, Fla.) added 17 and 15, respectively.
Sophomore Parker Cummings (Rochester, N.Y.) had 10 kills and classmates Amelia Combs (Eugene, Ore.) and Isabella Chu (Belmont, Calif.) recorded nine kills apiece to pace the Lions. Senior Jillian Kay (Capistrano Beach, Calif.) added six kills and four blocks, classmate Caroline Bond (Macungie, Pa.) dished out 36 assists to go along with 16 digs, and junior Caroline Davis (Orlando, Fla.) led all players with 24 digs in the loss.
The Green and White led by as many as four in the opening set before Emerson used a five-point run that included a pair of combined blocks by Bond and Kay to go up 22-18. The Beavers got within two on three occasions but a kill by Cummings coupled with a pair of errors helped the Lions secure a 25-22 victory.
Babson never trailed in the second set getting kills from five different players on the way to building a quick 13-4 lead. The hosts put away 16 kills and hit .256 in the stanza to even the match.
The Beavers used a 7-0 run early in the third that included two kills by Allen, a kill and a block by Gips and an ace by Lapins to build their biggest lead of the set at 12-5. Emerson chipped away and got within 22-20 on a block by Chu and senior Logan Steenbergen (Glenview, Ill.) only to see Allen respond with another kill. Two straight errors trimmed Babson's lead to 23-22 but McShane sandwiched kills around a put away by Chu to close out a two-point victory.
The fourth set featured five ties and four lead changes before the Green and White took the lead for good at 13-12 after consecutive miscues by the Lions. Emerson cut a three-point deficit down to one at 19-18 on a kill by Cummings before Babson answered with six of the next seven points to close out the match. A kill by Zuloaga and two aces from Seebold stretched the margin to 23-18 and McShane followed errors by both teams with a kill on match point.
The Green and White hit .242 over the final three sets and .212 in the match while holding Emerson to its second lowest hitting percentage (.131) of the season.
Babson returns to action on Saturday when it faces Endicott and Brandeis beginning at 1 p.m. in Beverly, Mass., while Emerson travels to Wentworth on Friday at 7 p.m.
MATCH NOTES
• The Beavers are 11-3 all-time against Emerson and have won eight of the last nine matches in the series.
• Babson's 15-match winning streak is now the second longest in program history behind its 22-match run without a loss in 2019.
• The Beavers have split the first two sets five times this season and have been victorious in the third set in all five matches.
• The Green and White has now hit .210 or better in seven straight outings going back to September 23.
